Below is an email I received from a work board where I had a resume posted- mortgageboard.net. I contacted the Yahoo IM of the person and felt it wasn't legit. the conversation of them is below as well- I checked the headers and sure enough it is Lagos, Nigeria- the person said they were in New York. I did not give any personal info.

Salutations! I am in your same situation, except I wasn't quite as aggressively skeptical so I went through the full interview and was "hired". The only personal information I divulged was my name, home address, and phone. I figured it wouldn't be detrimental to my identity or any sort of thing like that, I'm rather new to trying to get jobs and such and young so I have a level of ignorance towards identity theft -I know the obvious things such as not supplying my credit card # or SSN to random people.

After being "hired" I was given my first Task. I was given an email that directed me to (safe) web domains where I could access public information of corporations and their revenue and was told to record certain things and email my results to the "employer". I assume this was a sort of introductory training or exposure to what the actual work would be similar to. I was told that since I was hired they'd send me a check to be able to purchase software they use to facilitate the work " Here are the names of the software's you will need to start working with... BS 1 Accounting software ,myob business essentials software 2010,For Peach Tree premium 2010 US Patent Single Users Pack, simply accounting 2010 and a Time Tracker".

I am going to contact this "Tasha Moore" again tomorrow at 8 a.m. for more "job" instruction via yahoo messenger again.

There is nothing to be gained by continuing to communicate with this scammer. He has already shown his hand when he told you this:

they'd send me a check to be able to purchase software they use to facilitate the work

You will be sent a check and instructed to cash it and forward the money to the software "supplier" by Western Union or Moneygram.

The problem is, the check is fraudulent, and the "supplier" isn't a software seller at all--he/she is a mule, whose job is to collect cash and forward most of it to the scammers. The mule may be an accomplice, or may be another victim who believes he/she has a legitimate job.

Days, weeks, or even months down the road, when the bank discovers that the check is fraudulent, they will come back after you for the full value of the check, plus an assortment of fees/fines, and to add to the fun, they may call the authorities and have you arrested for fraud.

This scammer has your real life information--so it is best to just drop him.

I see, thank you very much for the info, I will indeed terminate my association with this person. I was immediately more skeptical after reflect on my post above, and I perceive it was very fraudulent in retrospect. Good thing I tried to search for any sort of contra-indicator of their illegitimacy and found this one glimmer of preemptive alleviance.

It seems to be a fairly new scam too, on the site where I had my resume the "Mercury Healthcare" job openings were very much in abundance and very present on the search engine of the resume-to-job facilitating website I used(it's listed in the OP's post).

Welcome Eleynamarie,

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic about the last question, so I want to be certain that you understand that this is a certain scam. Even if they come up with a plausible reply, it will be a lie. There is absolutely no doubt that it is a scam, and no chance it could be real.

I ran into something very similar, but with minor differences...the thing that really gave it away was the fact that she had said 'we will send you a check and tell you where to purchase to software'. This is a violation of internal controls and NO company would do this! A legitimate company would take care of all arrangements and would have their vendor ship the product directly to you. You would NEVER see either a bill, or a check for the goods unless it was a reimbursement for materials...but NOT software! To further show that this is a scam forward to my replay on the following day.

1st You stated that your temporary office is at 419 Park Avenue South, 16th Floor New York, NY 10016; however, the Secretary of State in New York does not show Melody Healthcare Pvt Ltd (MHPL) listed as a registered company within New York State, why is this?

2nd The New York County Assessor’s office indicates that 419 Park Avenue South, New York, NY 10016 is owned by Walter & Samuels, Inc; however, when I contacted Judd Ebersman (212) 696-7128 and Jim Gladstone of Walter & Samuels, Inc. they insured me that the 16th floor was utilized by a Law office and a magazine company. Can you explain why the building owner has no record of your company’s rental agreement?

3rd Indicating the company name as (MHPL) is a standard use to indicate the ticker ID; however, the SEC shows no record of such a company with this ticker existing. Can you explain why the SEC does not find the ticker symbol you listed?

4th The company name is Healthcare Pvt Ltd, which indicates a privately held limited enterprise. Can you explain how a privately held Enterprise is publicly traded, when doing such is a federal crime and against numerous trading regulations?

5th My brother is a senior manager in the auditing division of Internal Revenue, when I made an inquiry as to you company’s tax status he was unable to locate any tax filings under this company name from anywhere within United States. Can you explain how an international company with such a large presence failed to file their federal income taxes?

6th According to federal and state law every business is required to list a registered agent where their company has a presence, and is recorded with that particular state’s Secretary of State, but none of the 50 states have record of a registered agent for your company. Can you explain this violation of Federal and State law by your company?

Me: I require an answer to these questions to validate the legitimacy of your employment. Please note, if I do not receive an answer to these questions as a professional accountant I am required by law to report your business activities to the necessary government agencies. Likewise, I will ask a personal friend (a retired police detective that is now a private investigator) to research your true identity that will be given to the proper authorities. You have one day to respond.

I would add that my PI friend is currently investigating this individual's identity but has uncovered numerous infractions by this organization. In some instances a ‘hired employee’ was instructed to deliver ‘medication’ to an individual, where the FDA has not approved the ‘medication’, and the substance ended up being the drug XTC or a similar substance. There have been arrests to individuals that believed that they had a legitimate job.

There appears to be several versions of this scam being perpetrated BY THE SAME PERSON under different aliases. Each different kind of scam has a different result. In some instances the goal is to launder money as you pointed out. However, in other instances the goal is to acquire people’s bank accounts (to clear them out), and in other cases it is to act as an unwitting mule for this organization’s illegal activities by delivering illicit substances; in which the delivery person becomes an accomplice to the crime.

My PI friend has suggested that it is possible that the originating person may be associated with some form of drug cartel. Moreover, the suggestion was made (in regards to pharmaceutical “ingredients” companies) to file a report with the FDA immediately!

In another offshoot of the scam (as seen in Texas), where the scammer is identifying themselves as an insurance company, file a report with that state’s insurance commissioner.

If the scammer has obtained your bank information:
1st contact your personal bank, all three credit rating agencies, and credit card companies to file a fraud report with them.

2nd use your own discretion in canceling all money bearing accounts and have the balances forwarded into a new account to severe any chance of theft (some banks will do this and some won’t; most banks have a fraud department and may use your funds as bait to catch the individuals perpetrating the fraud).

3rd contact that state’s bank commissioner to file the fraud report.

In many instances the federal government is the best place to file identity theft and fraud reports with since they have jurisdiction in all 50 states, and have the ability to communicate and work with each state’s local government. (Such as the FBI…if they cannot investigate the action they can provide the contact information for the federal agency that can).

And let’s not forget those that might already be on probation for something that they are trying to amend. I will not pass judgment on your former action, but will say this: If you have fallen subject to one of these scams, contact your probation officer IMMEDIATELY! It is important for you to let them know ASAP so that you do not violate the terms of your release.

As I had mentioned, my friend is investigating the true identity of this individual responsible for this scam, and I will relay any identification information once received if possible. The very nature of feeding on the downtrodden and disenfranchised by this parasitic leech makes me sick. Our legal agencies that fight against these types of scum will catch them, and every bit of information that can be relayed to these authorities assists them in the apprehension of the guilty parties.

Lastly, if you should receive a check from this company or a similar there are several things that you can do.

1) Try to verify funds by calling the issuing bank; the phone number should be on the check.

2) Bring the check into your own bank and speak with a manager regarding the issue, and give any necessary information to the bank official that their fraud department will need. There is a higher probability of catching the issuer in fraud if you work with the bank officials that specialize in these matters.

Note: There is a chance that the check has been washed, and there are a number of legal issues that could result.

While most of the advice (especially pointing out that it is best to speak directly to the fraud department of the bank, as your average teller or customer service agent is often completely unaware of these scams) is sound, your first suggestion (verifying the funds) is exactly what has led several victims straight into trouble. Many victims have in fact thought they were safe because they "confirmed" that the account the check was written on had sufficient funds. In many fake check situations, the account DOES have the money--that does NOT make the transaction any safer.

The bank will honor the checks because the account has the money--but later, when the real owner of the account discovers that the money has been taken, it won't take the bank long to verify that he/she (or the business) did not issue the checks.

As far as bank accounts go--while there are certainly some scammers who are looking to empty bank accounts, in this particular scenario, it is most often not the case. The targets in these particular scams are often people who have been out of work for a long time, and are dealing with a lot of debt and little to no money in their bank accounts--there isn't anything there for the scammers to steal, and they know it. The scammers want victims' banking information because they want to launder money stolen from higher-value business or personal accounts through the victims' accounts.

It really boils down to one simple point: Legitimate businesses do not hire random people online to handle money or expensive items for them from home. Whether it involves cashing checks, receiving transfers, or charging or receiving and shipping items on behalf of a company--if you are hired based on a chat or a phone interview, it is safe to assume that you are dealing with a scammer.

hello and good day these scammers have a couple of different names who ever tells you, that you have to print checks is a scam and you'll get locked up, I just had a conversation with one of them, named [email protected] she told me the truth I erased it before copying, sorry about that but I promised her if she told me the truth I would not put her out there but then I thought about it, but all you have to do is not fall for that printing check stuff, that is simple...

I also find it interesting that the address I was given for the company's "New York office" (419 Park Avenue South, 16th Floor New York, NY 10016) is IDENTICAL to the address for High Times Magazine...check it out, people. Just sayin'...HIGH TIMES?? REALLY??

Scammers count on victims not checking details, but falling for the story and the money being the trap.

Congratulations on checking up on the address. Please do not educate the scammer regarding the address they are using in their script. Even though most people would not recognize the address, someone just might.

I wanted to put my experiences on here as well. I have had the exact same conversations on Yahoo! Messenger with a "[email protected]" who has a picture of a sweet old lady but has broken english throughout her typing. Also "They" have started using a new business "MEYER ORGANICS Pvt. Ltd" (no "." after the Ltd either). Had the same address which is how I found this forum. IM conversations went exactly like the others. Not going to bother meeting back for the 8am follow up though. The email that contacted me was "[email protected]" , so avoid this as well.
