Company Representative scams, Payment Processing scams and other Employment scams.

I got the email shown below this morning.

It looks like the usual @gmail.com company scam. No company will ever run with gmail.com emails.

The other part that is dangerous and Job Site should look into is the abuse of their name. These people may have found me through Job Site but I doubt that Job Site is "working side by side" with them.

I've seen other posts where a very similarly worded letter has been used and the job turned out to be money laundering. If this is true, beware. A not so bright friend of mine in Spain answered one of these and started working for the organisation. About 4 weeks after he started there was a knock at the door. He opened the door to several Guardia Civil (national police) officers, was arrested on the spot and all his IT equipment was confiscated.

Welcome to Scamwarners ashtonej.

You're spot on in what you say and your anecdote about your friend in Spain is useful to illustrate the risks of getting snared by these scammers. Theoretically you risk a ten year sentence in the UK for acting as a 'money mule' and official police sites make the legal situation clear, that ignorance of what you're doing isn't an effective legal defence. I would add that I haven't heard of an instance of anyone in the UK going to prison, but I suspect that this situation may change if the situation worsens. Having said that, the alternative of getting blacklisted from using a bank account effectively renders you unable to work or receive benefit, which could be worse.

CIFAS state that there were 45,000 instances of 'money mule' frauds last year and fraud on that scale represents an economic attack on the country.

The problem with employment sites is that they allow paid access to CV's and scammers make full use of the service. I can see no earthly purpose or reason to post an online CV and doubt any employer has ever scanned them. Advertising companies, spammers and scammers are their most likely users.

I would also add that one UK employment site has posted me offers from a company well known to staff boiler room scam sites including one recently raided by the police, and another company that offers salaried jobs for graduates that turn out to be door to door sales on an unpaid commission only basis.

As they used to say on Hill St Blues - 'It's a jungle out there - take care'.

CAR ADVERTS - If a car seller mentions escrow - he's scamming you Never ever for any reason pay anything until you have seen and inspected the vehicle
