I honestly don't know too much about how the craigslist email links are generated so I can't say too much about those, but when I see the exact same caregiver ad posted in New York and Chicago, it sets off some pretty major alarms.
http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/dmg/3908335526.htmlIn general, if you are going to be using a site like Craigslist:
First, google unique information from the ad to see if the ad is posted in many locations.
If it seems legitimate, and you want to continue:
1) Open a new email address that is not linked to any of your real life activities. Choose a service that allows you to protect your privacy (i.e., does not let other users see your information.) This helps to protect your privacy, and if you do encounter scammers you can change your address without impacting anything else.
2) Check out google voice or similar services where you can get a phone number that doesn't lead straight to your home.
3) When you first respond, limit the information you give. Don't give your last name or address. Get more information about the item or opportunity first. Nine times out of 10, the scam will be apparent from the 2nd email anyway.
4) Don't hesitate to check their location from their IP address, and verify they are where they claim to be.
NEVER give your social security number or banking information.
NEVER agree to cash a check or money order and purchase items for a stranger or forward part of the cash elsewhere.
NEVER send them money up front for a "business opportunity".
ALWAYS use a safe payment service such as paypal or another service you choose to pay for items (keep in mind that paypal does not offer buyer protection on cars)
NEVER send money Western Union or Moneygram.
