In the process of being reported for fraud

I feel like a complete idiot however I have to get this off my chest and hopefully get some advice. I, in hindsight foolishly joined with them, I had lost my job and money was extremely tight however that is no excuse when I should've thought rationally about what they were doing and how much money I was supposed to be earning.

Long story short, they totally screwed me over. After I made a transfer through PayPal they somehow managed to cancel the $8000 that they had sent to me so now PayPal have (likely rightly) frozen my account and are asking for almost £4500 from me.

I have no idea what to do, I'm worried that if I tell the authorities at best they'll laugh at me and at worse I'll be thrown in jail for being an accomplice in what now absolutely looks like fraud. In my defence I looked through their entire site at the time and tried to pick legal holes however I couldn't find any, I'm a scientist not a lawyer...

So there you have it, feel free to laugh at me but I really would appreciate any advice on what to do next - also I do not believe PayPal are actively looking for me to refund them the $8000, they are looking for 'business express'
