Recently got scammed and wanted to share the knowledge. Was contacted by a recruiter for a position that was tailored to my interest. While "Huron Consulting" is legit, "Huron Consulting & Search" is a scam. I believe there are similar scams like this, where the scammer pretends to be a branch of a well-respected company. Another similar scam reported is from "Boston Consulting & Search."
Recruiter asks you to fill out a pre-questionnaire application/pre-skill assessment test/references and also asks you to schedule a phone interview on his calendar. Seemed pretty legit until you got to the pre-assessment test. You are then prompted to purchase a $19.99 study guide from jumbabooks.com that will help you prepare for the placement test. The skill assessment test was pretty legit and the questions were what you would take for the certification exam. I finally believed it was a scam when no one called during the scheduled phone interview time. Looking back, I should have been tipped off when the scammer repeated "we are having email and phone difficulties." Oh right, because the contact information isn't real... Lost my common sense in the tough job market right now.
Here is an original email for those curious:
For those still looking for jobs... good luck and watch out! Guess I am back on the job market again lol
