Hello:

I replied to a job post on Craigslist for an Administrative Assistant position and I sent my resume and cover letter. My resume contained my contact information (i.e. name, address, phone number, and email). I noticed once I received an email back that it was a scam. However, since the person has my resume, I'm worried that they will use my information on it, should I be worried about this because I am worrying about it now.

Also on my resume, it had the contact information for my References and I'm worried that they will be contacted about the scam. Do you think this is possible and what should I do? Please help.

Here are the the emails I received from the person: E-mail: [email protected]

No need to worry the scammer wanted that information because he needed his scam to seem real. You may get future spam emails on that email address.

If you gave him your references emails address they may also receive future scam emails. You will want to inform them to be on the look out for scam emails.

In the future set up a throw away email address for online posting. Keep your private email address for friends and family.

You will find plenty of scam jobs on Craigslist.

Please contacta moferatorstor if you have a question or information about this post.

Please do not tell the scammer he is posted here.

I have just received this mail, and I just searched his name in the internet and found this is a scam.
thanks for posting it here

The scammer is West African, and the information you have given is not enough to commit identity theft, which is not what he's trying to do.

ingersollinc.com is a fake email-only domain. Please post the complete headers of the email so that we can kill it.

I got the same email but it was regarding a care giver job. After I realized it was a scam, he emailed me back with my response with a list of things to do and how he would be giving me my first week pay with the extr cash his mother needs to buy her medical equipment, as well as the rent fee for her.

The email was basically the same as yours but the criteria list was more specified for a caregiver, but the wage and lingo was the same. Almost like it was copied and pasted but only with the job details different.

It was really odd, i plugged his number in on facebook and lead me to this forum! Ha! :oh-joy:

Thank you all for replying. It makes me less worried now that nothing bad will happen, thankfully I noticed it was a scam.

Welcome to Scamwarners roykid1,

Your girlfriend need to put back the 100. Do not withdraw anymore money from that fake or fraudulent check. Inform the bank of the fraudulent check. Either the check will be fake and any monies with drawn will have to be re-payed back. If the check came from a hacked account you will eventually have to repay the monies back.

Print out the emails and show them to the bank.

Now the bad part. If you do not notify your bank of the fraudulent deposit your bank may refer your girlfriend to Law Enforcement for Financial Fraud. The bank may even close her account and make it impossible to open an account at any other bank.

Please contacta moferatorstor if you have a question or information about this post.

Please do not tell the scammer he is posted here.

As Bryon said, the bank is going to discover the check was fraudulent. It may happen within a day or two, or it may take as long as a few weeks. But when it happens, they will pull the entire amount of the check back. Anything she has withdrawn, she will owe.

Unless her bank is very generous or she has an excellent relationship with them, your GF is going to lose money on this. They will charge her fees for making a bad deposit. If the reversal and fees cause the balance to go negative (which is very likely unless she puts the money back and enough extra to cover fees) they will probably hit her with another fee for being overdrawn. If she has any other accounts with the bank, those might be frozen as well while they investigate, and depending on the bank's approach, she may not have the option to open a new bank account if they consider her too high-risk.

As Bryon indicated, if they think that she knowingly tried to defraud them (which includes failing to notify them) they can call the police and have her arrested for fraud. That's why being proactive with the bank is so important. If they believe it was an honest mistake they are much less likely to seek criminal charges (they will still want their money either way.)

As for the scammers, they are sitting in another country, hiding behind fake names and information. The receiver in South Carolina is likely another person who fell for a scam, and believes she has accepted a job as a payment processor or something along those lines. She will not know the real names or addresses of the scammers either.

The best thing you can do for the scammers is to cut off all contact with them. Block them or filter their emails to trash. They will likely send threats (they love to threaten with arrest and FBI investigations) but as long as she returns the money and notifies the bank, those threats are bogus. It is best NOT to continue correspondence with them or point out how you know they are scammers. If you absolutely cannot handle that, simply reply and tell them that the bank (or police) have informed you that the transaction was fraudulent, and that you are no longer involved in any transaction with them.

As for identity theft? If she has only given name and address and bank account, there is no real reason to be concerned. If she has given her social security number and/or her usernames and passwords, then she should immediately change any passwords (and security questions if she gave out that info) and consider putting a flag on her credit report for possible ID theft.
