Overview
The Chihuahua is the smallest of all breeds and has the distinction of being the oldest breed in America. They were named after the Chihuahua region in Mexico. It is believed that this breed descended from ancient breed that was larger in size and highly prized by Aztec royalty. The Chihuahua of today has a very fine bone structure, but are actually quite muscular.
Character
The Chihuahua is a very individualistic breed. They each have their own unique personality, so only a few generalizations can be made. They are commonly referred to as a "Chi". They are energetic, graceful, and display a human-like expression. Their life span is the longest of any size dog.
Does your dog bark, howl, and cry whenever you leave the house? Separation anxiety is extreme anxiety experienced by your dog when you are away from him.
Temperament
The Chihuahua is deeply devoted and fiercely loyal. They typically become extremely attached to one or two people. They are bold, fearless, and highly protective of their masters. They thrive on inordinate amounts of attention. The Chihuahua is by nature gentle, loving, and sweet-tempered. They are wary of strangers and make excellent watchdogs. This breed is not well suited for children or other pets. However, they are sociable with their own kind. Chihuahuas are excellent companions in the right circumstances.
Care
The Chihuahua requires minimal grooming. The Smooth coat variety requires only occasional brushing. The Long coat variety should be brushed several times a week with a soft bristle brush. Both varieties only need bathing once a month using a mild shampoo. Special care must be given to not get water into their ears as they are prone to ear infections. Dental hygiene is a must to prevent tooth loss. The health issues that affect this breed include slipped stifles, open font or soft spot, eye problems, and heart disease. The Chihuahua does not tolerate cold climates and must be protected when taken outside.
New dog owners, much like new parents, often have trouble deciding when it is necessary to seek medical attention for their dog or new puppy. The most basic rule of thumb is, if your dog is displaying behavior uncharacteristic of his normal actions, call the Vet. When is it time to see the Vet?
Coat
The Chihuahua coat comes in two varieties: The Smooth and Long coat. The Smooth coat has a glossy, soft, and close coat which is full textured over the entire body, but quite scanty on the head and ears. The Long coat has a soft, longer coat that can be slightly curly or flat. This variety does have an under-coat. Either coat type comes in a variety of colors such as fawn, brown, black, and white. The coat may be solid in color, marked with splashes of color, or tri-color. They are an average shedder.
Training
The Chihuahua can be difficult to train, but with patience, love, and consistency do well. They respond best to positive reinforcement. Chihuahuas can be housetrained by either the crate method or the paper training method. Early, extensive, and intensive socialization is an absolute must for this breed. Teaching your dog to sit, lie down, and stay is vital to the training of your new puppy. There are several accepted methods of house training your new Chihuahua puppy. However, if you’re looking for not just a housebreaking method, but are also interested in adapting your dog to a safe and confined environment for various safety and comfort reasons, crate training is for you.
Activity
The Chihuahua is an excellent apartment or condominium dweller. The majority of their exercise needs can be met indoors with toys or play sessions. However, they greatly enjoy going with their owners and benefit from daily walks. Using a harness is recommended instead of a leash is best given their delicate neck and bone structure. Socialization is one of the single most important things you can do for your puppy. You can help your pup learn to be friendly by properly socializing him/her to new people, places, and experiences.
Ownership
Help reduce the number of Chihuahua puppies in shelters by doing your due diligence. Many puppies are often purchased with little or no knowledge of what goes into parenting one. Uneducated decisions often leave the puppy in need of adoption and in the care of rescue groups. Bringing home a puppy into your family has many benefits but we first implore you to educate yourself. An informed decision will take into account the characteristics of the breed, your lifestyle, expected veterinary care, the demands and limitations of owning one, their activity requirements and levels of companionship required. Even the most responsible puppy owner makes mistakes. Read up on these 15 common dog owner mistakes. Sometimes it just takes changing your own behavior to make your dog a little angel.

Shipping
Is it really safe for the puppy?
I receive many inquiries on the process of shipping a puppy--individuals often wonder if it is safe and how it works.
Won't he/she be scared? How long does it take?
Won't it be difficult for the puppy having to be all alone in a crate for so long?
This is how I explain the shipping process to individuals to help them feel more at ease with the process of getting a puppy:
Shipping a Puppy Is Very safe: See Below Details
Shipping a puppy by itself to a new location always sounds cruel and embarrassing, but actually I think it is harder for us than the puppy(s). With my many years of shipping experience, I know for a fact that all of the pups are well taken care of. So if you stop and think about it, the airlines are not going to mistreat the puppy(s) for fear of lawsuit and customer dissatisfaction. I tape puppy(s) food and feeding instructions to the top of the crate and put frozen water in the crate, so it will gradually thaw out for the puppy(s) and the puppies are offered food along the ride.
The average flight is approximately 4 to 6 hours. I always ask about any delays or layovers and know the exact times and departures of the flights, so I know where the pup is and am able to give you the information as well.
The pup will arrive the same day as it is sent--usually a few hours. I have a big fluffy bed of shredded newspapers in the crate for the puppy(s) to nestle in and usually a pig's ear chew (they love them), and a toy or sock with my scent on it--to help the pup feel secure
What about shipping in the winter –is it not too cold?
If you decide on a puppy, I will guarantee -as I have for 16 yrs--that he/she will arrive safe and sound. Puppies can be shipped safely between 20 and 85 degrees--AA rules. All puppies ride in the belly of the plane where the temperature is kept at a comfortable 70 degrees--same as for the passengers--and they are the last on and first off the plane. Shipping during this time of year is completely safe and there is no problem so we need not to be afraid about that. Just like a person getting on a flight to go meet their relatives and/or friends for the holidays, shipping a puppy is very similar-and probably even a little easier. The only thing different about this time of year is that the airlines can be strict on the minimum temperature at each location (which is really good for the puppy(s) even though the plane is always kept at 70 degrees. I believe it is mainly for their liability and protection. Likewise, in the summertime--they will not ship if temperatures are too hot along the way. If this is the case, we will just wait for the next best day to ship or ship earlier or later in the day to combat the hot/cold part of the day.
NOTE.. Most shippers specialised in shipping pets will use a temperature regulation crate called an electronic crate.
These type of crates are used anytime since they can regulate the temperature to the one best for the puppy(s) travel
What is involved in the shipping process?
Since I am 30 minutes from my nearest airport and do not charge extra for delivery like most breeders, I try to make each trip count as much as possible by taking multiple puppies at a time while striving to accommodate to your specified times. Therefore it helps me greatly if you can specify multiple times/days you (or any other person with ID) would be available to pick up the puppy. So if you are interested in having one of the pup after all amounts have been received, I am able to book the pup. I will need to know the day(s) and time(s) you are able to pick up the puppy(s) your nearest airport, and your home address and phone number.
Usually, I can only book a flight three days in advance so they are aware of the temperatures for shipping. After I have booked the pup, I will call and/or email you with the flight number times, and location where the puppy(s) is to be picked up. All you need to do is pick up the pup at your airport--taking a couple forms of identification, like a driver's license or insurance card and the airway bill number that I give you. Then I ask individuals to contact me as soon as possible after they receive their puppy as I'm very anxious to hear about the puppy--if everything went ok --what you think--and any other questions you might have.
It seems lengthy in explanation but it actually goes very fast!
What is the normal Shipping cost?
. Most of the times I like to use American Airlines as they have provided me with quality service. International airports are often the best bet, but I would be glad to check out your local airport to see if shipping is possible. Shipping to Alaska and Hawaii also available at select times and may cost slightly more. I am only able to ship within the US, Canada & Puerto Rico at this time, although I have had individuals to fly in from other countries to pick up a puppy(s). Shipping has been running approximately $115 which includes, a normal dog crate and health certificate. If 2 puppies are being purchased at the same time, from the same litter, they can be flown together in a larger crate for $165.
When sending me your airports address, please send 2 different airports that you would be willing to travel to pick up the puppy(s).
What our puppies are fed.....
Our puppies are raised on Nutri Source small/medium breed Chicken and Rice Puppy a quality 4 star kibble sold at many vet clinics and pet stores. We always suggest the use of a quality vitamin--2 of which we have had good results with are NuVet and Pfizer Pet Tabs Plus. Puppies are also fed on the dry puppy food. We suggest when getting your puppy to feed them of a morning and again of an evening in order to be able to monitor when they will need to go potty. You can start with 1- 2 cups of feed each time--if they clean up the food then add a bit more until you get to the correct amount of feed that your puppy will consume.
Pet insurance
Pet insurance: types of policy
There are four main types of pet insurance, each with different costs and restrictions
A pet insurance policy will cover medical expenses if your cat or dog becomes ill or is injured in an accident. However, it won't cover routine visits to the vet or events that you could have anticipated, such as routine vaccinations or neutering.
Below we explain the most important features of a pet insurance policy and the different ways they can pay out.
Pet insurance policies reviewed Which's experts have analysed and rated more than 70 cat and dog insurance policies so that you can find the perfect cover for your beloved pet.
And thousands of real customers have rated pet insurers for customer service to help you choose a provider that gives you top-notch service along with a great deal.
Which? members can log in to read our reviews.
Pet insurance: Vet fees The most important feature of a pet insurance policy is the vet fee cover and how this pays out. Vet fee cover typically range from as low as $500 to as much as $12,000.
Pet insurance policies fall into two main categories, lifetime cover policies and non-lifetime cover policies:
Pet insurance: lifetime cover
These types of policy offer the most comprehensive levels of cover, paying our for on-going illnesses for the lifetime of the pet, but tend to become quite expensive as the level of vet fee cover increases.
•Per condition per year lifetime cover provides a maximum cover limit per condition, which resets per year. You can claim for more than one condition per year
•Annual life time cover provides a maximum overall cover limit that resets each year.
Both annual and per condition per year policies will cover ongoing illnesses year on year, so long as you keep paying the premiums.
'Per condition per year' policies may offer superior cover at a similar price to annual policies so run quotes from a variety of different providers.
Note: If you decide to opt for a 'per condition per year' pet insurance policy, double check with the provider that cover for each condition renews each year. If not, then it is a 'per condition' policy which is a non-lifetime cover policy (see below).
Pet insurance: non-lifetime cover These policies limit how much they pay per condition before it's excluded.
•Per condition non-lifetime cover: This cover pays a limited amount per condition with no time limit, but once the amount has been used up the condition is then excluded from any future payouts. If lifetime policies are too expensive, these are the next best option.
•Time-limit per condition non-lifetime cover: This will have both a per condition limit and time limit of typically a 12 months before the condition is excluded. These policies tend to be the cheapest, but offer the lowest level of cover.
Cheap pet insurance: accident only and time limit policies Accident-only pet insurance policies.
These policies cover your pet for only accidents and exclude cover for illnesses from the policy entirely. Although these policies maybe cheap in comparison to standard pet insurance policies they may turn out to be a false economy. A recent survey of Which? members about their claims history over a two year period showed that 70% of claims were for illnesses.
If you are on a budget and considering an accident only policy, its worth comparing some quotes from cheaper standard policies in our cat and dog insurance reviews on the off chance you get a good deal for your pet that covers illness.
Time-limit per condition pet insurance policies Having some form of pet insurance in place even if it offers a low level of cover, such as a non-lifetime; time-limit per condition policy, may still take some of the impact out of an unexpected and expensive vet bill.
Before choosing one of these policies, make sure you've run quotes with alternative types of cat and dog insurance policies with no time-limit to make sure you aren't missing out on a better deal. As our reviews show, cost does not always correspond to the cover level. Additionally, other risk factors such as where you live in the US, in a urban area or country can make a difference to what you are quoted.
•Tip - if you opt for a per condition policy with a 12-month limit, putting some money into a best rate savings account may act as a buffer for any illnesses that persist or become chronic illnesses.
Pre-existing conditions not covered with new pet insurance policies
Its important to note that no pet insurance policy on the market will cover pre-existing conditions. This means if you have made a claim for your cat or dog on a policy, and decide to switch provider further down the line the new provider will exclude that condition from the policy. For information see pet insurance pitfalls and checklist.
