Scams selling or giving away non-existent animals, often Puppy Scams.

So I have decided on buying a small dog chihuahua or a pug, so i went on the usual site facebook, gumtree, preloved etc only to nearly be scammed not once but 3 times in one day....

first up was facebook pet site by a fake page "tracey morgan" she offered to let me rehome 2 gorgeous pugs and the pictures she sent looked so authentic, i believed every word that her husband was ill in hospital blah blah, she then said about a shipping company ([email protected]) and realised something wasnt right, so i done my research searched the shipping company and the info on the payment emails that were sent to me nothing added up then '3 Urgent requested payment emails in 4 minutes' almost begging me to pay then and there and turned out to be this CAMEROON scam that i had read about on here....

i got over it and started my search again a couple hours later on gumtree and found a chihuahua, yet again another sob story the mothers just died we will need to use a shipping company as we are not currently in scotland anymore we are in belfast we are selling due to them reminding me of my dead mother thats why im here at her funeral ....by this point i had had enough i called him out and i got quite furious, the similarities in both these emails and messages were almost unreal, asking me all personal circumstances questions making sure i was a right match for the dogs etc...after i called both of these people out saying i was going to the authorites firstly i got blocked on facebook, and had no replies from either of them..

i have now found another chihuahua i have messaged about on gumtree according to the ad they live ten minutes from me so any messing about with shipping im definitely on it, but i did an google image search of the dog in the photo and it isnt the dog they are selling it was a picture of a dog that was killed previously near my home town, which is really strange so definitley another scam :(

today has been a nightmare all i wanted was a little pup to spoil it has got me so clued up on scams for sure never done so much scamming research in my life but thankfully i did i hope everyone else does too to prevent it from happening to you i hope this helps

Welcome to Scamwarners LouiseMill91

The worst possible place to purchase any pet is an online ad site. I specialise in spotting fraudulent car adverts on UK ad sites and I usually pick up 100 a day just from one ad site and, as regards pets, I wouldn't even bother spotting fakes from the real thing because most are frauds. Apart from that it's the worst way to buy a pet.

You should never buy a pet you haven't seen first and ideally seen how it's been raised. In the UK there are 'puppy farms' where dogs are bred like battery chickens in foul conditions with no regard to their health or welfare and they can make very unsuitable pets and cause you a mountain of vet bills.

Unless you can afford to buy from a reputable breeder the best way is to visit you local rescue pound. In the UK we have the RSPCA and you can choose a pet and, if they consider you a suitable owner, you know they will have ensured it is healthy and they'll know all about it.

Buying anything online can be risky unless you know who you're dealing with but when dealing with pets don't even think of doing it this way unless it's just to make contact so that you can arrange a visit.

CAR ADVERTS - If a car seller mentions escrow - he's scamming you Never ever for any reason pay anything until you have seen and inspected the vehicle

~Thankyou terrance you could probably have me work for you now the amount of research i have done today,

the thing is on these sites they were at first advertised close to me distance wise,
and i said i would be willing to go view and collect for myself but then the story went as far as them moving over seas, due to members of the family dying or for hospital care etc

it really has put me down i work hard for then someone to try scam my money from me, i have tried sspca here in scotland but havent found what im looking for as yet. today has drained the hell out of me..

A lot of people have lost a lot of money to this type of scam and it's going to keep on happening and at least you had the good sense to check before you paid. You may feel cheated and low now but imagine how you'd feel if you paid out your money and received nothing. Then they usually make up new fees and will even go as far as threatening you with the police. These scammers, like most, are pure scum, so you can at least be reassured that you've made at least one scammer very unhappy.

One tactic the car adverts scammers use it to blitz advertise their adverts in every area or region to make it look like they're convenient, then they change location when you ask to visit.
