Room for Rent and other rental scams

I think this is a rental scam. It's way too cheap, but how can I know for sure?

The use of the +4470 UK telephone number strongly indicates a scam. This service re-directs to any cellphone anywhere in the world and is much favoured by scammers.

The information in the mail is merely padding to interest a victim prior to the fee, deposit/legal/lease charge or money, which will be requested, most likely wired (untraceably) by Western Union or MoneyGram.

Of concern also is the request for personal details mailed to someone, who after all, can be anybody from anywhere.

Hey! I got the same email from that person! I originally thought the emails sounded very generic, so that kind of rang the bell. I am glad I googled the person's name...that's how I came across this site :D

hmm same here looked all nice, but then i got the e-mail of the "family laywer" bad move, these is what showed me it must be scam!!!!!
i wanted to rent in perth.... same price + first two mail are 90% same......

I will start by saying thankyou very much for this page. I got the above email for what is for me a dream place and started the process of negotiation with this woman over MSN. We got the the point of asking about payment and she started saying she needed the bond and 2 months up front and sent to her over Western Union. I told her I wasn't comfortable wiring money especially when I haven't even seen the place yet and that if she had an Australian account . She kept saying that she needed the money as a deposit for DHL security so she could send me the keys. I asked to talk over the phone and I tried to skype the UK number and it didn't work. The only number she gave that worked was in Egypt. It was then that I thought it a good idea to google the name and I found this site.

The fact that someone offering an apartment for rent has a bank account doesn't guarantee it's not a scam, but if they want payment or some form of 'proof of funds' using Western Union then it's so likely to be a scam it's not worth getting involved.

Anyone involved in owning or renting property in the West will have a bank account. I don't know how you could manage Council Tax, Electricity, Gas, Water or any of the other many bills you have to pay, and how would you pay the rent ? The only possible reason anyone could use is that they are trying to hide their identity from you, which isn't a good sign for someone wanting cash from you.

Having bank accounts in West Africa is much less common, and anyway being asked to make payment to Lagos may make you suspicious. Sometimes they can ask an accomplice to assist them in a foreign country by allowing them to use their bank account, but that's much rarer as it gets the account holder into trouble.

Flat/apartment rental and Western Union don't mix. There's a very good reason why all the best deals insist on payment by Western Union, and that's because they're mostly scams where you won't get anything.

I got an e-mail from that Kenneth Parry, acting as another lady's barrister after enquiring about the validity of the rental agreement she had wanted me to sign and scan.

I noticed the gramatical errors in the e-mail as well as the over the top attempt to sound like a professional lawyer. The lady, and this man's e-mail was also different to the name he signed off with. She called him Humphrey Chambers. She also communicated with me via skype, so don't be fooled by their willingness to appear physically online to build trust. The lady, when i grew more and more suspicious even told me she loved me for some bizzarre reason i think she thought i would grow less suspicious.

I appreciate your quick response. My apartment has a 24 inch flat screen Tv on the wall/dvd/cd player, fully air conditioning including washing machine/ Dishwasher,telephone line, high speed internet facilities, balcony, Dryer, microwave, it also has a Private entrance, Private Bath, Phone jack, TV, Cable jack etc. There is also garage for your car park and garden.

More so, i just wanna bring it to your notice that there a lot of people here in looking for vacant space but they are not finding it easy cuz of the voluminous people looking for Room/flat. So they grab any vacancy they see...there are ways you can make a reservation for the vacant space if you want me to hold the room down for you and if you also want me to erase the advert online meaning to make it unavailable for people. So let me know your opinion asap.
NB:
I request that you send me a scanned copy of your Id for reference and if possibly copy of ID or INTL Passport or Driver's License as i need to know more about you before renting the property to you. And again will be very much appreciating if you could advice me of your work place and what you do for a living.
