Total scam. Legitimate rental companies do not ask for a deposit via Western Union or Money Gram.

We almost fell into the Hilario Rodriguesz Alcantarar scam too... for a rental in DC. Here's the chain of emails regarding this rental. Notice the urgency.

Kudos to Western Union for alerting us that rental deposits via WU are often a scam. I called the guy after we heard that message, and got a Google voice mail. Nothing added up.

Hope this one gets caught.

I am happy that Western Union alerted you to the scam. Please pay for all Holiday/Vacation rentals with a Credit Card. Never send money to some one you never met via Western Union, Money Gram or Bank Transfer.

I fell victim to the topmostvacationhomes as well, and I should have known better the minute they said I had to pay by wire transfer. If anyone figures out a way to get restitution (or revenge!), please let me know. Here is the email trail (from bottom up):
