The thief will tell you that you can rent his accommodation only if you can prove that you have genuine interest. He will ask you send money by wire transfer (normally Western Union) to yourself or a member of the family to show that you have sufficient finances and that you are not a "time waster".

Another variation of this scam is that you need to send (by Western Union) money in order that the keys and other documents can be couriered to you

He will ask you to send him the transfer details.

Make no mistake ! Western Union Transfers can be picked up virtually anywhere in the world and with the minimum of identification. They are almost impossible to trace once the money has been collected. You will never get to see the accommodation or your money again.

If you are reading this because you are looking for property to rent, and you are in contact with this thief you are probably searching Gumtree or similar listing sites. If you receive any requests from 'Landlords' asking for some kind of payment by Western Union before viewing, then it will also be a scam. Please forward the mail to me at the address in my signature line and I will investigate and list them if necessary.

Welcome to Scamwarners.com ioeyaoi

Scammers will often ask for a copy of a Passport (or other Photo ID) to make their scam seem more believable - maybe this is what a genuine Landlord would do ?

On the other hand they have been known to open an e-mail address with an address very similar to your own name and continue scamming, pretending to be you - and if they are successful it will be you that the Police come looking for in the first instance.

I would suggest that if the ID card has been issued to you for 'official purposes' that you should contact the Issuer or your local Police and explain the circumstances. - Doing this, there will be a record of the event should there be any issues later.

Guys, me and two other girls did the same mistake.
He sent us a copy of LEASE AGREEMENT, which seemed really professional and serious.
This is the reason why I sent him a copy of our passports.
Do you think we should go to police in order to preserve our identity?

Welcome msvvu87,
It is possible that the scammer will use the copy of your passport in future scams.
So, it is wise to inform your local authorities that you sent this copy and that you didn't realize it was a scam at that moment. In the unlikely event that this comes back to bite you, you have an official record about what happened.

Ok thanks a lot.
Anyway I would like to inform you that the person (or the people) who is frauding using the name : Malleville Adrien is not the real Malleville Adrien.I surfed the web and found out that probably it'a company of scammers, which uses name and passports of frauded people. I found out, infact, that the real Malleville Adrien posted a message on the website "Accomodationforstudents.com"in March because he was looking for a room in Bristol from July till September. I found the message of the "false"Malleville on the same website and when he contacted me, in order to ensure me that I was dealing with a reliable person, he sent me the passport of the "real "Malleville. So people pay attention: don't send your Id to this email "[email protected]" because he/they could use them to fraud other people!
