In this case, the scammer was using SMS.
Phone number: +3476876313

I own the listed apartment going for $800 , i am in canada now working with ATB financials. I can come down to show you only if you are willing to give me proof that you have 2 months and security. If still interested then get back to me with the following:Full Name: Address: Profession: Thanks. Jeffery Stone

You can send the info here by sms. My email is [email protected].

After the info request, this was received:

Info recieved and accepted. I will take d ad off craigslist. My wife said she is okay with you as our tenant. I will take a flight down to New york and conclude this as soon as you give me proof that you have the 2 months rent and security

There is no commitment here. All im asking for is proof and i promise you that you will love the apartment when you see it. Its worth the stress
.

To be sure you have the 2 months rent and security before i come down to NY, look for a friend or family member and send him the 2 months and security via western union money transfer. After that scan and send me the reciept by email
attachment so that i can log on to http://www.westernunion.com to track and confirm

This person asks for proof that you are able to pay the deposit and rent due to a string of time wasters.
This proof is in the form of a Western Union payment to a friend or family member.

Sounds safe. It's not!

At other times, this person asks for a deposit payment via Western Union and they will send the keys through a courier company.

In either case, if payment is made and you give this person the details, they will collect the money.
You will not hear from them again.

If you are reading this because you are looking for property to rent, and you are in contact with this thief you are probably searching Craigslist, Gumtree or similar listing sites. If you receive any requests from 'Landlords' asking for some kind of payment by Western Union before viewing, then it will also be a scam. Please forward the mail to me at the address in my signature line and I will investigate and list them if necessary. 347-687-6313
