Room for Rent and other rental scams
by tonicc;; Tue Oct 12, 2010 8:12 pm
I came across an ad online for a beautiful apartment up for rent (in the same town I live in) but the person trying to rent it is in London... I know that these apartments usually rent around $1000 a month and this person is renting it out for $650 a month, everything included. These are the emails he sent me...

I first emailed him asking if the apartment was still available

he said:
Hello,
Thank you for your interest. The Apartment located in __________________ is still available. It has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. I am looking for someone to live in it, as soon as possible, because my company has won the auction for a project, in construction, for a building that will rise up in London, United Kingdom. I am a civil engineer, so my accommodation period in England will be about 4 years. The renting period is from 1 month up to 4-6 years. As a result of this I want to rent, for this period, at this price and also to find the perfect person for my apartment. I`m the owner of the apt and it's like in the pics. The apartment is unfurnished but if you want you can use my furniture from the storage unit. The rent for 1 month is 650CAD$ (for the whole apartment) including all utilities (water, electricity, Internet, cable, parking, air conditioning, dishwasher, garbage disposal, microwave, refrigerator). You can move in the apt in the same day when you receive the keys. The only problem is that I`m the only person who has the keys but I hope that we will find a compromise.
Any further questions please contact me back by e-mail.
Thank you for your interest and i`m waiting for your answer

Then I had asked about making an appointment to view the apartment...

He said:
Hello ,
Thank you for your reply. Like I have informed you before, the price you have to pay for one month of rent will be 650CAD$ with no extra fees you will have access to all facilities provide by the building. The utility bills are paid directly from my bank account. The price will not increase monthly, it will remain the same for the whole period that the contact will be signed for. We can start with a basic 1 year contract with the possibility of renewing it or with the period of time suitable for you.About the payment, I would like to receive it monthly into my bank account and I hope there will be no problem for you to wire the money to it. The apartment is ready for you, you only need to receive the keys and the contract so you could check it out, and see if you like it. The apt will be unfurnished but it can be rented very easily with the furniture at the same price. Also pets are allowed. Since I'm in London, United Kingdom we need a way to complete this deal that will allow us to make sure we receive what we are asking for. I have found a way for us to complete the deal safely and fast, and in this way you will receive the Keys in less than 2 days. The solution is provided by a company called GlobeAir-Cargo-LTD which will handle the payment and delivery of the Keys. I have found a procedure that will allows you to pay for the rent of the apt only after you will receive the keys, and through this way you will see it and decide if you like it or not, before sending the payment. Please click on the link bellow to the GlobeAir-Cargo-LTD web site to see how we can complete the deal safely and fast directly from the web site of the company where this procedure is explained in the SAFE EXCHANGE SERVICE: globeair-cargo-ltd.all.co.uk/index2.php ( if the link is not working please try and copy it in your web browser)
Let me know if you are interested !

... I found this to be a hard one to figure out, I'm not sure if he is a scammer or not and any input would be greatly appreciated!

Scam.

They're impersonating a real company with a fake website using a free webhost.

FREE domains all.co.uk
Register for your application at all.co.uk for free domains. You can choose from 1623 domain endings, such as .all.co.uk up to 500 free domains. These domains you can set up on their free storage at all.co.uk or forward an already established website.

All escrow services operating in the UK have to be registered with the UK Financial Services Authority by law.

Unfortunately I can't get through to their website to check at present but I'm pretty confident that they aren't registered. I can check tomorrow.

The way you are offered a bank account which then switches to this escrow service is suspicious and on no account should you make any payment to anyone by Western Union.

Oops

http://www.globeair-cargo-ltd.all.co.uk/members.php?type=my_transactions

The site is so insecure anyone can check up on what transactions are going through. :yikes:

I'd report them to the UK Information Commissioner if I thought they weren't just impersonating a real company.

Though their customer testimonials (which also appear on websites that are now dead) compliment the company on shipping cars, one of which is a large limousine, the site includes these bizarre stipulations.

Service features include:

* Door-to-door express delivery for shipments of any weight, where individual pieces may weigh as much as 68 kg.
* Maximum length per package is 274 cm, maximum length and girth combined is 330 cm

There is no mention of what happens to goods that exceed those specifications.

In their FAQ's they mention

At the close of the transaction, GlobeAir-Cargo-LTD will send a cheque to the Seller. For an extra $7.50, we can send the cheque by Canada Post Express Mail.

So they wouldn't deliver it themselves. Perhaps their cheques are heavier than 68 kgs and exceed their size restrictions  (The moral being - don't drink and build fake websites). A shipper that employs another shipper to deliver cheques - a true masterpiece.

I received the exact same letter from "gene robbars", only the rent was 655 for an apartment that rents for 1200 here...I was suspicious because the email said that there was two bedrooms and two bathrooms, but when I looked on the Building's website, none of the unit floorplans had two bathrooms. And none of the units pictured looked anything like the gorgeous place on the site.. Still , it claimed to me renovated and I was intrigued so I wrote back, requesting to view the unit. I too got the second (exact same letter) and the link to this GlobeAir-Cargo-LTD SAFE EXCHANGE website. The terrible English was a dead giveaway, and the site looked sketchy as hell. You count the spelling mistakes!!

New services at GlobeAir-Cargo-LTD:
GlobeAir-Cargo-LTD SAFE EXCHANGE

* The buyer part and seller part must register at GlobeAir-Cargo-LTD;
* The seller part must ship the package to us;
* After the package arrives to GlobeAir-Cargo-LTD, the buyer part will be notified that the package is available for payment.
* The buyer part will get a tracking number to verify the package details.
* The buyer part must transfer the payment to GlobeAir-Cargo-LTD via Western Union (if the money amount is lower then 3000 GBP) or bank acount tranfer (if the money amount is bigger then 3000 GBP).
* The buyer part will be notified via email with the name and the address where he must deposit the money.
* The buyer part gets the package at his address
* The buyer part inspects the good 5 days
* If the buyer part is satisfied with the package content, he must send an email to [email protected] to confirm that the transaction must be finished. If the buyer part is not satisfied with the package content, he can return the package
* GlobeAir-Cargo-LTD transfer the money to the seller part (if the buyer part accepts the package)

So I did a couple searches. Well the real globe air cargo site looks great, but has NOTHING to do with this company. The only other link I could find was to this page... hahaha well there you go, another story of when it seems too good to be true it probably is...

Oh, also how could I go about reporting them?
by GomerPyle Tue Oct 12, 2010 10:22 pm
It'll be added to the heap of fake sites our site killers are handling.

It's turning in to a mountain but the fact that you've flagged it up here will mean that anyone who does a google search will be led here to see it's fake.

Hopefully people will learn to be much more cautious.

And thank you tonicc for posting as well! The more people that know the better...I would feel terrible if someone got taken in by this guy!!

Here's the latest letter...(even after I wrote back saying he had to be out of his mind to think that I would have anything to do with such a sketchy site!)

If you are ready to proceed with this transaction I will need to inform you with the steps on how this service works and how we can make it happen. You will only have to deposit to GlobeAir-Cargo-LTD the first month of rent 655CAD$ so they can proceed with the shipping, and you can receive the keys and the contract. I will pay for a 2 days delivery so you will receive the keys and the contract signed by me right away. I will explain you step by step how this process will work:

1 - To start the process all I need is your full shipping info.
2 - I will go at GlobeAir-Cargo-LTD to deposit the keys and the contract on your name as the intended receiver.
3 - GlobeAir-Cargo-LTD will check the envelope to see if everything is in order and also the legal papers that will come along with the keys and proof of ownership.
4 - GlobeAir-Cargo-LTD will send you a delivery notification to let you know they have the keys and the papers in their custody and that I am the real owner of the apartment I am renting to you, in which you will also have all the instructions to complete the Western Union transfer to the GlobeAir-Cargo-LTD Agent.
5 - At this point you will have to go to a Western Union Location and make a money deposit on the GlobeAir-Cargo-LTD Agent Name for the amount we agreed, the total amount you shall deposit for the first month of rent.
6 - After you make the deposit you will have to send the transfer information to GlobeAir-Cargo-LTD.
7 - GlobeAir-Cargo-LTD will verify the payment information and if everything is in order they will proceed with the delivery of the keys and the contract.
8 - After you receive the package, you will go and check the apartment and in 5 days you must contact GlobeAir-Cargo-LTD to inform them if you keep the apt or not and if all is in order you will instruct GlobeAir-Cargo-LTD to send me the information about the money deposit and I will be able to receive the funds. If you don`t like the apartment they will be sending the money back to you and you will send back the keys and contract. Also pay the Western Union transfer fees from the total amount you need to deposit and send the rest in balance.

Let me know if we can move forward and e-mail me all your full name and shipping information so we can proceed with this deal.
