Room for Rent and other rental scams

beware of new IDs and email addresses, one claimed to the this website developer MARC ALEXANDER. the following email i have gotten in 3 days in a row with two different email address (1) Marc Alexander <[email protected]> claimed to be a MALE (2) Fur Maria <[email protected]> claimed to be a FEMALE

the following are the email correspondence that i have gotten before i realised it is a scam (luckily i have not sign up any deal since i am not in singapore)

From MARC ALEXANDER
1st email:
Thanks for your mail and for your response.. The apartment is ready for
immediate move in and like Singapore but before i start telling you about
it, it is only right that I let you know more about me being your potential
flatmate so that you can know somethings about me.My Name is Marc Alexander and I
am a easygoing male . My Hobbies are swimming,reading and traveling. In
fact, I have being to the United Kingdom,USA and also recently in spain .I
also like hanging out with friends and associating with people but I have
not had the opportunity to hang out with my friends as I have being busy
with my studies and also as I am looking to have my masters very soon.. :)
My Dad used to live her in this apartment with my Family but we later moved
to London where he passed away and I am the only one in this apartment
although my mother is still in London over seeing my late father's
business.About my apartment, It is a three bedroom apartment and as I live
in one room of the apartment, I have two rooms ready for move in. The
apartment is located in Singapore and the rooms have the following
amenities:
Internet connectivity.... (Broadband)
Heating and cooling system.
Electricity
Gas Phone connectivity
Car Space, et..c
You will have free and unlimited access to all part of the apartment,
the Kitchen, the living room and course except my room :)) and you can also
have your own visitors. The rent for the room is 500 and this includes the
utility bills(all included) and you will be required to pay a security
deposit of 1500 . This security deposit will be refunded to you at the end
of vour stay in my apartment Also its Negotiable .I hope it suits you well
an d if you have anymore questions you can surely ask me, I would be glad to
send you the pictures of my flat and also the tenement agreement so that we
can conclude and you can eventually move in.Regards

2nd email:

Thank you for your mail. The flat and rooms are still available and as I
said, my apartment has three bedrooms and a living, I am using a room,
while two are for rent and when I finally get a tenant for a single room,
the other could be used as guest room. I scanned pictures from my
apartment, Please find attached, it shows the living room, bathroom and
toilet (located in the rooms for rent and I would be for your private
use) and also photos of the kitchen where we deal with our stomachs :-).
The rent of the apartment is 500, so that you also make a deposit of
1,500 deposit will be refunded at the end of your stay in the apartment,
though nothing is destroyed during your stay I think you are felt in my
previous mail. The transportation facility in the region and would result
is the transport system is very quiet good as it is in a good location
near train stations and bus stations and gases such as
stations, it is also close to some good cinema and grocery stores
where you can shop for household items to make space would result in a
very residential. Also Here is the email of the last tenant who leave the flat and just relocated [email protected]
you could ask him details about me and the flat and also i believe he could show you the receipt of the rent which i issue to him when he move in to my flat . as an evident of my last tenant

Before moving if there are conditions and rules. I want us to decide
about them and it just requires your consent and shortly afterwards we

facilities and equipment present in the apartment that I might have
missed in my previous post.

There is also a washer and dryer in the apartment laundry needs,
adequate parking

How to rent:

- You must sign a document confirming that the room has been reserved
for you. this way that I can confirm that my roommate potential.

- You make your first deposit and monthly payment for me. and after
confirmation of your payment, I will issue the receipt of your payment.

- You must read the contract agreement that I send to you first as a
letter attached before you payment.For the document to be successfully
established, I would require the following information.

The contract will be ready and we are delighted to confirm that my
roommate that if you provide these details

(1) Take action and move the date of departure;

(2) Your address where you want the keys to the apartment, the original
contract and receipt of payment to the confirmation of payment after me,
you must sign and bring with you when you move in my last as roommate

(3) Your passport digital ID for identification ..

You can come see the apartment and look around environment.I'm not
there yet and would not return for some time ... I am now inLondon for my
studies and would be back in December 2010. Once I have confirmed with
my roommate contract details requested, my family lawyer will Perpar the
document you confirm that my roommate by the law of contract. and the
contract you state that my roommate by law, I would like to send you the
keys of the apartment and send the mail specification and receipt as well
.. I scan for my ID for my passport identification.II say, why I need
your ID so, I hope you are some kind of roommate I can trust as far as I
can not see you at the moment but I think you Alway keep your promise to
me to be a nice and clean roommate and be honest and also keep the order
dish. I hope you understand me very well and everything?.

I look forward to read from earlier that you can continue the contract
and other details about the documents you have as a roommate.

Hello ,

Thanks for the mail , How are u today , I hope you are doing good, Anyway I am very glad to read from you ,You have really sound like a serious flatmate with good details and great personality . And every landlord will like to have someone like you as a flatmate .

I just want you to understand that i have made up my mind to have you as my flatmate and i will like you to do that has well , I just want you to understand that as much as i have not seen you , I still believe i can trust you and i believe you will not betray the trust i have in you . Bcos some many people in the internet make so many promise to you before they move in after they move in they will demange your property or steal some valuable items in the flat out of your knowledge .

Well i want you to understand that presently you would not be able to see the flat as i am presently in london for my master's and i am a student who is looking forward for a better future , so what is your plan for life? I wish my ex- flatmate was still living there he could show you around the flat . But so sad he leave the flat the same time i want going on my trip to london bcos he got admision in Usa to study law.

I am in London for my Master's as i told you in my previous mail so looking forward to finish My Education and become a Medical Doctor by profession. I am very Sorry at the Moment You can see the flat as i am not around at the Moment That is why i have bring up an Option for you to locate the Apartment and view it from the outside also i send you those Pictures to have an Idea of where you are renting . and You can aswell tell me which room you are interested to occupy. I hope you are doing well with what ever you are doing for living ? I want to bring to your notice that i have gotten so many people contacting for the same flat and some urgently need the place. But its my best right to take my time to make a better choice. and not to get a wrong person for my flat anyway i have gotten 2 people interested in the flat and ready to make payment . So one of them made payment Today but he never told me he was a couple with 4 children so i find out after i received is transfer and i have to refund is money back bcos i believe he is not a perfect flatmate for me . I can only Recognise you as my flatmate According to law of renting. that is the only way you can become my flatmate is by signing the lease contract and making the payment immediately . By that way i can confirm you as my rightful flatmate . I have knowledge my lawyer about our coming together to become flatmate and he is ready to prepare the Lease contract confirming you as my flatmate. He will need this details below to prepare the contract and once i have confirmed you as my flatmate , I shall reserve the flat for you immediately .

it seems that the two emails is exactly the same, same in spelling and grammatical errors, while the sender seems to kept on reminding us that they have been to other countries, being a medical doctor by profession, and yet write such terrible English!!

and somewhere between the lines, the scammers seems to think that we the desperate tenants will not be able to detect such discrepancies and still think that we will be cheated of their ruthless tactics. the pictures are enticing but a room of SGD500 and located in areas of Novena seems a bit out of place since i did some research on rentals in that particular area and about 10km of radius from Orchard, seems a bit unlikely that such a nice place (as of the pictures) can cost so cheaply. and if you look closer, the structural integrity of the rooms in the pictures taken do not seems to match each other.

i sincerely hope that these scams will stop, singapore government has been trying very hard to promote singapore as a good destination to work, study and live in, and these scams will only spoilt the opportunities from going further.
