Looking forward to hear from you with all this details so that i can have it in my file in case of issuing the receipt in your name and contacting you. Await your urgent reply so that we can discuss on how to get the documents and the keys to you, please we are giving you all this based on trust and again i want you to stick to your words, We are putting everything into God's hand, so please do not let us down in this property of ours and God bless you more as you do this. Hope to read from you as soon as possible
.

This person asks for a deposit payment via Western Union, MoneyGram, pre-paid credit card or bank transfer with a promise that you can have the keys to a property that does not belong to him.

Sounds safe. It's not!

At other times, he will ask for proof that you are able to pay the deposit and rent due to a string of time wasters.
This proof is in the form of a Western Union or MoneyGram payment to a lawyer,a friend or family member.

In either case, if payment is made and you give this person the details, they will collect the money.
You will not hear from them again.

All the details such as names, addresses, pictures etc. that the scammer uses in order to back up his story, are stolen from elsewhere.

If you are reading this because you are looking for property to rent, and you are in contact with this thief you are probably searching Craigslist, Gumtree or similar listing sites. If you receive any requests from 'Landlords' asking for some kind of payment before viewing, then it will also be a scam. Please forward the mail to me at the address in my signature line and I will investigate and list them if necessary.

Unfortunately I fell into this scam trap. This person listed a place in George Street on the 3rd December and I had a gut feeling that it might be a scam, but being desperate I trusted the vetting system set into place by flatmates.com.au. They require an Australian mobile to register - which they send the code to that mobile. On top of that, the bank account belonged to the Commonwealth Bank, however, $2450 later, I am left without a house or enough money for a bond/rent in advance - best Christmas ever...

Unfortunately the police can't do anything, nor can the bank reverse the funds or speak to the Commonwealth Bank to get in contact with the account holder or freeze their account (and you would think that the police would also get involved in locating the owner of the Commonwealth Bank account... But nope, they wont).
