I recently had been exchanging emails with someone who claims to be renting out an apartment, but since it has come to my attention that their has been some renting scams lately I would like to ask you guys if her email sounds like a scam.

Here it goes:

Thanks for your interest and inquiries about my house. I am the owner of the house you are making inquiry of. The house is still available for rent and we are looking for a responsible person/family to occupy and maintain the house. The house will be available for a period of 5 years or more. My Family and I just traveled to Indiana for a program called Health Resources and Services

Administration(HRSA), the program is taking place in three major countries in Europe, UK, USA where I and my family are currently located..Right now.

I'm in need of a good and responsible tenant that can move in into my house and take very good care of my house and maintain it in my absence. We will be away for a while that is why we made up our mind to put up our house for rent to whomever that will take good care of it. Please i want you to note that i spent a lot on my property that i want to give to you for rent, so i will solicit for your absolute maintenance of this house and want you to treat it as your own. Utilities include Water, Trash, Sewer, Gas and Electricity. The money is not the main problem but i want you to keep it tidy all the time so that i will be glad to see it neat when i come for a checkup. I also want you to let me have trust in you as I always stand on my word.

Please feel free to ask any questions you do not understand and i will be looking forward to receive your email as soon as possible. As i am not around to show the inside, you can go check out the house and the neighborhood from the outside and get back to me if you really like it for more information.

In case you see any sign board, they are the Realtor in charge of my house before I decided to take over by my self. I am no more working with them and don't bother to contact them because formerly i wanted to sell the house before me and my Lovely Family now decided to rent it out instead of selling it out.

Thanks for choosing my home and remain bless.

Best Regards.

End of Email.

Anyway also tonight I asked her if I can have her number and if I can look at the apartment first before signing anything and she gave me her lawyer's nunber, she said her lawyer would answer the questions for me. Does that seem a little odd though? Or is she just being cautious as well?
Sorry had to take the address and prices out haha:)
Thanks!

The writing shows signs of being written by someone of West African origin and the following 2 points confirm that it is a scam.

A legitimate landlord would make arrangements for prospective tenants to be able to view the inside of the property before parting with any money and the sign is there because the property is really up for sale/rent and the scammer stole the details from the realtor's lsiting.

Please do not tell scammers that they are listed here - it will take them seconds to change their fake details and their new details will not be listed for any future victims to find.

The Scammer will have wanted you to send him money to have keys and documents to be couriered from abroad, or to send money to a family friend to show that you are financially sound and not a time waster. He would have asked you to send money by wire transfer (normally Western Union or Moneygram) or by Bank Transfer.

These transfers can be picked up virtually anywhere in the world and with the minimum of identification. They are almost impossible to trace once the money has been collected.

You may find this BBC news report and video of interest.... it shows how a similar Rental Scam works..
