Room for Rent and other rental scams

Hi,

I would like to share one experience i had with a certain "Mr. William Goh" who claimed he owned this condo we were inquiring about in an ad at gumtree. I believe he also has the same words as what he used with the previoulsy posted one about the LAKESHORE with 5 BR.

Here it goes:
___________________________________________________________________________________________
Hello,
My name is William Goh, I am the owner of the apartment you inquired about.
I'm renting the whole house for $1500 per month, plus utilities.
Honestly, I would like to rent my apartment for a year, since I'm on my trip to Ukraine to my new fiance :)
If you take the apartments for one year or more, I can cut down the price to 1400 per month.
The apartment is very beautiful you will absolutely love it I'm very confident about that!
It's furnished, there is a washing machine, microwave oven, everything needed is there including WiFi internet and cable TV.
The apartment is free and available right now. For what period of time are you interested to rent it?

William

and after that he asked the following:

Hi,
Before anything else, I would like to know a few things about you, such as:
- Full Name
- Age
- Occupation
- Do you have a pet?
- How many people will be living in my flat?

William

then, after that i received the following:

_______________________________________________________________________________________

From your description I understand you're a quality person and I would love to have you in my house.
I will return to SG at the end of January when we can meet and sign the paperwork and everything. Until then, if you want to move in faster or if you don't want to risk someone else renting it, I could send the keys to you via FedEx, so you can stay in the apartment until I get there at the end of January. For that I require a security deposit of 1500 which also represents the rent for the first month. Do you prefer to pay by bank or is western-union more easy and convenient?

William

after that, i didnt reply already. and i googled his name and about renting an apartment here in SG, and i found this site and the warning about the lakeshore.

we all should be very careful about these kind of scams. i just wish that nobody would become a victim of this. He used this email address : [email protected]

If anyone out there who have other information about this person, i hope this can be reported to authorities before he try to find another victim.

Welcome to ScamWarners phoebe_charmed1. You have done a great job of posting information about this scam and scammer. You have done a great thing by doing this.

Sadly the authorities would only tell you that this is a scam and do not respond to them. Telling this kind of story in itself is not a criminal act. Taking money under false pretenses is, though scammers do not use any information that is traceable back to them. That is why we exist, to get the word out about scammers and slow their "business" down as much as possible.

Thank you for helping us and those who will find your post.

Hello,

There is a lot of scammers online. So we have to be aware about this. You should report him to the police so that he can't do this again. You can spot a scammers if they operate their scams through 3G mobile phones, poor English is a dead give-away that you might be a target. A lot of these scammers use English as their secondary language.
