Room for Rent and other rental scams

The cheap and cheerful brand of scammer fake website. Barely old enough for the paint to have dried, but I plan to target apartment scammers ruthlessly. much like they do the public.

The phone number mentioned 07023089852 is associated with previous scam sites, and I'll check if they remain in existence as it appears that there's a nest of them.

This is the comedy end of the apartment rental scam business.

Do not view this site if you're affected by flashing lights or feel queezy.

To show
copyright (c) comforthomelettings.com
at the bottom of the first page is pretty dumb, but then I guess that most people will be shielding their eyes from the spinning pictures.

Quite what benefit a scammer thinks he gets from a domain privacy service I don't know, but he might as well show the registrant as 'scammer' as no regular trader needs their services.

Method of Payment Accepted:

Due to high of fraud on Credit Cards, we have stopped accepting them. We only accept Wire Transfers Only. Once you agreed with the requested deposit, our Payment will be forwarded to you for the deposit

They pay the client ?

This bears all the hallmarks of being set up by an idiot.

Now let's go seek comforthomelettings.com

The domain comforthomelettings.com is for sale.

Once a domain has been used and tarnished by a scammer it has a negative value.

Spelling, punctuation, domain privacy service and rather a bizarre underground map showing bombing locations  I kid you not - and the scammer can't spell apartment.

It's nice to go stomping all over the work of a scammer. Any potential victim googling these sites will now come straight here and discover the truth. :D Result - no payday for the scammer and no victims.

I better post his scam phone number

+447011152919

as he's also posting on New York apartment rental sites and posting employment scams too.

I'm afraid that craigslist is swamped by scammers, certainly for London apartment rentals. I'm not sure what the solution is but it'll become useless to scammers let alone anyone seriously looking for a rental if it remains like this.

It's even attracting some pretty demented scammers.

£40 / 1br - Bedroom : 1 Bathroom : 1 Close to Princess Diana's castle (Paddington )

That's a new one on me and I live in the UK, though the one advertising a flat next to Harrod's Food Hall was amusing. Would that be in Soft Furnishings then ?

These are Nigerian scammers and their websites but there is another group whose work is far more professional and harder to spot, and to make matter worse they make use of bank accounts. So don't be fooled. Avoiding the silly scams may lead you straight into the arms of the smarter ones.

Hello,

I searched via google for:

scam "domain discreet"

and found this forum topic. According to your last posts, it seems like there are multiple scam-sites connected to Domain Discreet. But I dont really know what exactly the registrant is or does.

Does it mean, Domain Discreet only offers and then other start those sites doing illegal stuff with them,
or is it like Domain Discreet is the one that also creates those sites?

And if Domain Discreet only offers, then how come that there are so many scam-sites using Domain Discreet?
by Michael Sat Feb 05, 2011 2:35 am
Domain Discreet isn't a scammer itself. Basically it's a privacy service provided by the registrar. You see, when you register a domain name you have to provide information like a name, adress, telephone number, email adress. When checking the whois of a domain all that data is publically viewable. People who don't want that information out in the open ask for that extra service, so their details remain hidden.

Real companies and organisations almost never use those services, as they have nothing to hide. Scammers will use them most of the times, as they have many reasons not to get their details out in the open :)

(Of course, this doesn't mean that all scammers use domain discreet, or that all domain discreet sites are scammers!)

I hope that answers your question? :)

Yes. Thanks. But this leads to another question.

Is it usual when the hoster of a (global) dating site uses Domain Discreet? As far as I know, they are located in the US. Why should they use such service?
by Michael Sun Feb 13, 2011 11:09 am
I guess it's not that unusual. One can have many reasons - they want to hide something, or they like their privacy. It's a sign that the site isn't registered as belonging to an actual company, as those would have their details in the open. It could mean that it isn't as professional as others, but again, we can't be sure of that.

It's the same way I would advise people never to make payment to a stranger by Western Union or MoneyGram Aldwin. There's nothing wrong with the services they provide, it's just that they have never been intended as a method to make commercial settlements.

Having said that, I've never seen a regular apartment rental company use a domain privacy service. I use various criteria to scan for fake sites in bulk, and I have to admit that I never give precise details of the methods I use, knowing that scammers visit here to discover what's happening to their work, so I'm happy to give them incomplete information. :D

I only divulge what suits my purpose in obstructing and preventing their scams. I've found another method which will be very handly in various ways. With so many members of Scamwarners working on different aspects of their operation, they must be having a lot of trouble co-ordinating what they're doing.

I have craigslist under constant scrutiny, and if they stay away from there, it'll reduce their income substantially - and give me spare time to include gumtree. :D

As an example from this morning's search of craigslist

http://www.apartmentintopcity.com/

Possibly the domain privacy service is being used in this instance to hide responsibility for the only website I've seen that appears to have been assembled using crayons. To be honest, when I first opened the home page, I thought my pc had crashed. Staring at it for any length of time will bring on a migraine.

Bearing in mind that a website is intended to authenticate fraudulent ad listings, this one is most likely to have the opposite effect. I doubt the site builder will understand what I'm saying - and they'll be at school now anyway. :D

thanks for the info. Are any of the ads on Craigslist in London legit? I have used Craigslist, primarily in US for all kinds of theins: finding renters, buying and sellling cars, tickets for sporting events and concerts, sports equipmentetc. There is an occasional scam that you can easily spot - but nothing like this!

Any legitimate sources for flat rental that you can recommend?
