This person asks for a deposit payment via Western Union or MoneyGram with a promise that he will send the keys through a courier company.

Sounds safe. It's not!

At other times, he will ask for proof that you are able to pay the deposit and rent due to a string of time wasters.
This proof is in the form of a Western Union or MoneyGram payment to a friend or family member.

In either case, if payment is made and you give this person the details, they will collect the money.
You will not hear from them again.

If you are reading this because you are looking for property to rent, and you are in contact with this thief you are probably searching Craigslist, Gumtree or similar listing sites. If you receive any requests from 'Landlords' asking for some kind of payment before viewing, then it will also be a scam. Please forward the mail to me at the address in my signature line and I will investigate and list them if necessary.

Good news (insert name)..i carefully went through your application details and out of the other interested applicant's application,i approved yours and have decided to rent my home to you,i have two other applicant's who are interested in renting my apartment and also ready to pay for the total move in cost but i don't have confidence in them to take care of my apartment and they are both smokers, so i will like you to keep my home neat when you move in,i will be visiting you from time to time to know how you're fearing in my apartment and i will like to see in well taken care of whenever i come around.

You will be coming up with an upfront payment of a 4 weeks rent of $1040 and the 2 weeks bond deposit of $520 which makes it a total sum of $1560.Note that the 2 weeks bond deposit is refundable after your lease period in my apartment.As soon as this payment is made,i will be sending you the apartment keys and rental lease agreement documents via Dhl courier service with your names and the address which you provided to me in your application form (insert address).Below are the items to be delivered to your doorstep as soon as payment is made.
