Room for Rent and other rental scams

Hi,

We are a couple looking for home for rent in Sweden - Goteborg. We saw an ad in blocket last week.
http://www.blocket.se/goteborg/En_mysig ... ?ca=15&w=1

There were two phone numbers in the ad. We called one number and we were asked to visit the apartment the next day - 12th april. We saw the apartment, we liked it. the person who showed us the apartment told that this is his uncle's house and he is renting on behalf of his uncle. We were okay to take the apartment. He asked to pay two months rent as advance and one month's rent to start with. He asked everything in cash. But we told we need a bank record. So we gave him the two months rent as cash and sent one month rent through bank. He gave his uncle's person number to us. We also signed a contract, but he told that he has to submit the contract to the apartment association and they will send the formal contract to us through mail. He gave us the key. He told that he will renew the apt with new wallpapers and the apt will be ready by Sunday - 17th April.

But when we went to the apt yesterday, we found that the key is not matching the house. :( When we call the phone numbers, we get voice mail only. Now we don't know what to do. We are new to this country. Please help us on how to proceed in this case. Thank you.

Firstly, report this to the local police.

Ask your bank to trace the payment you made through them, and where it went, they may give you and address, but not likely due to privacy, although the Police may be able to obtain it.

Check with the Apartment Association as well, they should be listed in the Apartment building somewhere.

Other members will be here shortly with more relevant information. I'm not from Sweden unfortunately, others are.

I'm sorry to read about your loss.
As we deal with internet fraud here, we are unable to help but you should report this to the local police immediately.
As this person had a key, it is likely that the scammer is a previous tenant or even known to the current tenant.
The police should be able to find a connection somewhere.
