This person asks for a deposit payment via Western Union or MoneyGram with a promise that he will send the keys through a courier company.

Sounds safe. It's not!

At other times, he will ask for proof that you are able to pay the deposit and rent due to a string of time wasters.
This proof is in the form of a Western Union or MoneyGram payment to a friend or family member.

In either case, if payment is made and you give this person the details, they will collect the money.
You will not hear from them again.

If you are reading this because you are looking for property to rent, and you are in contact with this thief you are probably searching Craigslist, Gumtree or similar listing sites. If you receive any requests from 'Landlords' asking for some kind of payment before viewing, then it will also be a scam. Please forward the mail to me at the address in my signature line and I will investigate and list them if necessary.

i fell for them:( they have all that information on me..im scared..what do id do? im only 17 and i dont pay bills or have a credit card so they shouldn't be able to steal my money but still...what do i do?!

I wouldn't worry Kimmie. They do that for extra effect to make the scam look better. You are just one of hundreds I am afraid. Of course he is a liar and any messages he sends that are supposed to come from others are written by himself. If you have the details and messages please post them here.

I fell for this as well. I have a large check from "donna butler" that was sent to my home. I dont know what to do with it?! HELP! I went to my bank and it does have value on it but i dont know what to do its a lot of money!
Well at least for me 1000 is a lot!

??? Before you do anything, please deface the cheque as "FAKE" in order to stop any confusion if you are caught with it.
The options open to you are to take it to the bank and make them aware of these fakes, take it to the police.
You could just destroy it or keep it as a reminder of that you were nearly scammed.
