Room for Rent and other rental scams

I am planning to do my Masters in Melbourne and this is my first time to Australia. I registered in few rental sites to help find accommodation and immediately started getting scam mails.

I registered in share-accommodation and got some 5 scam mails immediately which looked so real.

To my surprise, I had problem login into well-known easyroommate site. This despite me paying for one month's subscription. Repeated enquiries to easyroommate did not fetch any positive results either. It went to deaf ears.

I am quite surprised by these scams especially in Aussie sites. I have been using these sites for Singapore related ads and so far I've never received even a single spam or scam mails.

Welcome to ScamWarners studentaus. Rental scammers are ubiquitous. The show up on all kinds of rental sties because everyone is looking for a "deal" and that is how the trap their victims.

Please feel free to post up examples of the scams you have encountered so others may benefit. It helps to include the scammer's email address and the script they use.

I hope you used a distinct password on the site you are having difficulty with. Sadly, some sites are built to phish email accounts and passwords, or are cloned for this same activity. If you used a password you use in other places (not recommended), be sure to change your passwords.
