We will be very pleased if we can find the right tenant to rent our home, a person who is a clean freak and does not tolerate anything that has to do with dirt... we also would like to know more about you and your family, your renting experience and how long and when you plan moving into our home. This person asks for a deposit payment via Western Union or MoneyGram with a promise that he will send the keys through a courier company.

Sounds safe. It's not!

At other times, he will ask for proof that you are able to pay the deposit and rent due to a string of time wasters.
This proof is in the form of a Western Union or MoneyGram payment to a friend or family member.

In either case, if payment is made and you give this person the details, they will collect the money.
You will not hear from them again.

If you are reading this because you are looking for property to rent, and you are in contact with this thief you are probably searching Craigslist, Gumtree or similar listing sites. If you receive any requests from 'Landlords' asking for some kind of payment before viewing, then it will also be a scam. Please forward the mail to me at the address in my signature line and I will investigate and list them if necessary.

You have also said a lot that pleases us and we have also seen how wonderful you and your wife can be when you move into our home. My concerns has been solved by you and we believe that all you said should be done the right way in ensuring that we trust you of becoming our tenant. We also plan on making our tenant family friends when they move in.

If all arrangement goes well, we will have the entrance keys and other relevant document in a hard copy paper shipped to your present home address for you to move in at your convenient date. Our home is beautiful and need no amendments. All you have to do is bring in your belongings and maintain the utilities for us. We also have Internet cable in our home as we speak, and will like you to take absolute care of our house when you move in. As soon as you get back to me I will be attaching a rental application form for you to fill and get back to us with your information so that we can know you better.

I cannot stand people like that!! Ugh I'm so depressed now because that house was soo cute and obviously too good to be true... Thanks for posting and helping me determine this is a scam!

Mr. & Mrs. Jesse J Jenkins Jr is also a codename they have been using with the same kind of email in the Seattle area....they go through the email address of "[email protected]". DO NOT RESPOND THIS IS A SCAM!!!

This very same scam is posted on Craigslist for a home in Bismarck, ND under the name tagline "$1200 / 4br - Single-Family Home (Bismarck ND)".

The email address listed is [email protected] (which is the name of the individual listed as the actual owner of the home per the property tax records). I can't believe I even wasted a minute of my time with what appeared to be a legitimate posting. Once we received the first email reply it was clearly a scam, but I feel violated for even giving this poster my name, my wife's name and where we are from. Here is the initial email reply:

I know it feels disgusting that the scammer has got hold of some of your details. But there is nothing he can do with them. He might try to use them to target you with a different type of scam, but in your case this is highly unlikely; he must have realised that you are not an easy victim.

I advised Craiglist and other online posting site that this listing was a scam and attached this message board as a link. I also left a message with the actual registered realtor of the property.

There is a listing for property 3141 Madera Ave, Oakland, CA on Trulia.com, and if you contact the landlord using the site, you get the exact same response previously posted. (The guy is a Robotic Programmer in Georgia, blah, blah.) It is an obvious scam because none of my questions were answered, and way too much other information was given instead. The contact information for the scammer in this case was:

I drove by this house. It wasn't even empty or ready for "move-in". After seeing this exact email being sent to people through the country, word for word, I must believe its a total scam. So sad that it is still going on.

You will have to read this from the bottom up, but I was so disappointed that people make a living off this kind of thing. My husband and I even spoke with the relator regarding this house. It's aweful.

Thank you for replying to my e-mail. As you can see from my signature line I work for X as his secretary as well as everyone else's here in the office. ? I'm a jack of all trades. My husband is the manager of X. We just had a daughter in February, and her name is X. She has been a much needed blessing to our lives.

We attend Florence Baptist Church, and are good Christian people. As far as being clean, I would defiantly say we fit that category. Even though my husband and I both work full time our house is cleaned every night before we go to bed, we have somewhat of a routine to help each other out so we can spend as much time together as possible. Not to mention I use to clean houses as a part time job.

I'm sorry to hear that your home did not sell, but I am more than happy to say that my husband and I would be a perfect fit to take care of your home while you are away. We currently live at the X and are paying more than you are asking for a smaller place. We would like to move because we need the space for our daughters toys, bedding, and the rest of her goodies. We also need a study, which we are hoping to use as the third bedroom.

Our October rent has already been paid for, so we would be able to move in November 1st. If you are willing to cut the deposit in half my husband and I discussed cleaning the house for you instead of you doing it yourself or hiring someone. We have done that before with others we have rented from, just a thought. Please let me know if you need any other information and I will be more than happy to share it with you.

If you don't mind me asking how much did your electric and water run you a month?
