The thief will tell you that you can rent his accommodation only if you can prove that you have genuine interest. He will ask you send money by wire transfer (normally Western Union) to yourself or a member of the family to show that you have sufficient finances and that you are not a "time waster".

Another variation of this scam is that you need to send money (again via Western Union) in order that the keys and other documents can be couriered to you

He will ask you to send him the transfer details.

Make no mistake ! Western Union Transfers can be picked up virtually anywhere in the world and with the minimum of identification. They are almost impossible to trace once the money has been collected. You will never get to see the accommodation or your money again.

If you are reading this because you are looking for property to rent, and you are in contact with this thief you are probably searching Gumtree or similar listing sites. If you receive any requests from 'Landlords' asking for some kind of payment by Western Union before viewing, then it will also be a scam. Please forward the mail to me at the address in my signature line and I will investigate and list them if necessary.

We are deaf tenants of Manchester & victims of fraud from this person with false name is David Mark and with his email address's: [email protected].
He used the professional actions to force us to transfer money via Western cos he lives in Lagos, Nigeria but he wanted to let us the property in London with false tenancy agreement and as long as promised to send keys by DHL. Since 17 June to now we spent money and didn't have the keys from him. Now we dislike Gumtree always has a lot of fraudulent 'landlords' with false names and different emails addresses.

Now I remember how I got 2 emails from Gumtree at same time (the exemplary interval in 30 minutes), the email addresses were:[email protected] from Richard Brown.

From David Mark, where he assured us to receive DHL with the keys from his property. I asked to prove his personal ID but he refused and wrote:' I don't know you and why to show ID us?'

I got same writing from 'Richard' as David Mark and believe he is an one man with different names. Now I with my family realised when I found the forum of Scamwarnes. Therefore I did put my evidence of fraud.

I have reported to the local police and disappointed with their attitude to the deaf etc. 1 week ago I sent my reports to www.actionfraud.org and www.scam.gov.uk and they didn't reply that their actions are not involved in a fraud with victims of fraud from 'landlords' as civil matter between tenants and landlord and not criminal matter and all.

I'm sorry to hear that you were scammed.

Since 17 June to now we spent money and didn't have the keys from him.

It is impossible to get keys from him. If the apartment actually exists, he doesn't have the keys himself. He is in Africa because that is where he lives, not because he is working or volunteering there. He does not, and has never owned an apartment in UK.

This type of scammer uses stolen photos of apartments and houses, and copies either parts or all of real ads for properties. He then places his own ads, and collects deposits for his fake rentals.

This is not a dispute between landlord and tenant, because there is no property. The scammer is not a landlord, he is a criminal. The case is a criminal case, not a civil case, because the scammer has posted fake ads with the sole purpose of stealing money, and he has promised something (an apartment) that he knows he will never deliver. The truth is, the police really can't do anything, because he is in their jurisdiction, out of another country--but they do need to understand that this is a criminal matter, not a civil one.

As we are relatively new to property searching we are finding it hard to understand how such an arrangment can be made with you not in the country, and would therefoore require some details, just for our peace of mind, I hope you can understand this as I have had dodgy landlords in the past leaving me slightly sceptical of any future agreement I may make, not to imply this is the case.

I am sorry it took longer for me to reply than we arranged, got stuck into some baking.

Thankyou for taking the time out to reply, I assume you are a very busy man, and we really appreiciate it.

We can have the deposit to you by the 12th of October, or possibly earlier if absolutly necessary, and the assurance that it will be kept for our residence.

We would like it to be furnished if this is no extra trouble to yourself as we have little furniture between us. I assume it will be the funiture in the pictures? Which sets it off nicely as is so it would be a shame to remove this.

I'm sorry to have to ask this, but as you can appreciate, as you have your concerns, a few worries still reamin in my head, as this is such a big decision for me, and such a lovely house. Is there any possibilty of getting a previous tenants number to contact to put my mind at rest, no problem if not, we understand your position.

I am utterly in love with the house already, and i can see me being very happy. I know that Chris will love it too, we will take care of the place and there is no need to worry about us being messy or unclean. And we are very respectful of other peoples belongings.

I guess the next step would be to arrange the details of the deposit transfer, which we are happy to do at your convinience.

Please note that sending computer viruses is an illegal act and it is NOT condoned or encouraged or supported by ScamWarners. Do not send any virus to any one for any reason. Many scammers do their evil deeds in internet cafes. Sending a virus most likely will infect a computer that is used by another person to make a legitimate living. Not all users of internet cafes are scammers.

While we work hard to interrupt the income of scammers, we do not want anyone to do anything illegal to accomplish the goal. We expose their tactics, scripts, email addresses and fake websites. Sending a virus is just wrong and two wrongs don't make a right.
