Room for Rent and other rental scams
by scadvanced Tue Sep 06, 2011 10:26 pm
I posted an ad on craigslist and received a response almost identical to most of the ones I have found on this site. Since I didn't find this person's name or email on the site I decided to post.

First email was from [email protected]

Good day,

I will like to know if the room is still available for rent.

Thanks and hope to read from you soon.

Sharon...

After my response for more info, I received an email from [email protected]

Hello,

Thanks for getting back to me. I do appreciate your response and the details(price) of the house, after i went to check the ad again. My name is Sharon Pears,27 years old,fun-loving,outspoken, friendly, clean, caring, and respectful of others, a non-smoker,don't do drugs, drink occasionally, and drama free kind of person. I graduated last year from The university of Manchester, Manchester in UK...I am single and have no children,do bible studies on weekends and sometimes Karaoke nights with my roommates.Being a Christian I've never missed a Sunday without going to Church.I would love to secure the room for myself before my arrival to the state as I'll be moving in with my luggage. You seem to be a very interesting person to be with and I must confess to you that you will enjoy staying with me in the house because I make people smile always.I will be in the States before the end of next Month for the next one year as i am coming for my masters degree program-me. I was born in Manchester. (UK) and my Dad is from Texas (San Antonio) but has been living in Manchester for the past 20 years since my Mom is from Manchester.

I attended The university of Manchester, and I speak both German and English fluently,Am presently on research work in Luxembourg (Belvaux) on (HEALTHY ECOSYSTEM AND HEALTHY PEOPLE).And it is based on ecological services, sustainability, population growth or economics, but to Western’s Ecosystem Health Program, these factors are central to determining health outcomes. am almost done with that because its part of my prerequisite for my masters in Microbiology.I would have loved to call you but this is a remote area and calls is hard to go through from here and I don't want to waste much time .I'm really interested in renting from you and i do really love pets but i don't have any at the moment.

I would have loved to see the place but am very far away which makes it a little harder, but with some recent pictures i think I'll be good.I would love to know more about you and if you have garage or parking space as I will have my own car, pls let me know the total payment of the place and more over i will send your email to my Dad for him to email you later because he is the one that will be paying the bills but nevertheless,I will like you to send me your full Name and mailing address, your phone number as well,so that my Dad will issue out the payment to you from a United State Bank Cashier's Check (NOT OUT OF STATE CHECK). I will need the following information to have my Dad issue out the rental payment to you.

(1) Full name as it will appear on the payment.
(2) Physical Address
(3) phone number

Hope to hear from you soon

Sharon

Since I knew it was a scam, after receiving a similar email from Trina Harris, I didn't respond.

I too received an email from this "woman". Fortunately it went directly to my spam inbox... I also received a similar email from somebody else named "Kevin Morgan".

I also ran an ad in Craigslist to rent a room. My email was cleverly tailored to match up with my criteria as noted in the ad itself. This is not the first such email of this type. Have to admit that the English language is improving in each subsequent email, but it is still noticeably detectable that it is a non-English speaking person on the other end. BEWARE.
I have wondered: how much harm could they really do with just your name and address and phone number?
by Con Warner Sun Nov 13, 2011 6:51 pm
^^^ Your name, address and phone number can most likely be found in the public domain with a little effort.
These scammers are after a quick payment and don't tend to make the effort involved with ID theft.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over that. 8)
