Rental Scammer - [email protected]

Below are the e-mails I got from this scammer. What's concerning is that the original Craigslist post had no red flags, and I drove by the house and glanced at the outside myself. I took down the number on the realtor sign and called to verify that was the owner's name, that he was out of the country, and that he was trying to sell and now rent -- all checked out! I found a full website for the program he says his wife works for. And city records verified that was the owner's name. But more searches turned up scam e-mails posted by other people very similar to this one.

We got the same three emails...word for word. It seemed like a scam. I'm glad I checked! Flagging on craigslist!

I thought about taking a drive past the property to check it out but figured I would google this organization the "wife" worked for first. It's terrible that someone would make others waste so much time and energy. The 4470 prefix numbers are used by scammers because they allow the scammer to appear to be in the UK and they can really be in any place in the world.

Thank you so much for posting this! I'm in the Washington DC area and saw an ad for a house rental that just seemed too good to be true. But, I wanted to see what would happen so I sent an inquiry. Below is what I got back. When I looked at all the amenities included it just seemed too good to be true, and it includes utilities. Yeah right! I tried to look up the address in MSN maps and Google Maps and it is listed but not viewable from the street view. That prompted me to look further into this and I found this sight. I wish I could post the picture they included here as well. The pics are of an ordinary looking white couple standing next to these poor African people. For the average American, which includes most of us, we'd fall for this quite easily--A nice looking white couple standing next to poor black folks. Good one! But, the writing style of the letter is what really gives it away. I don't think a couple trying to rent their place that lives abroad would write a letter like this or bother to give personal details about their work to complete strangers. That would practically invite squatters to just move in to their house since they know they aren't going to be returning for 2-3 years. Thanks again for posting this! It really helped me alot. Jim

There were photos of the supposed outside and inside of the home -- I had previously been interested in buying in that neighborhood and while I had not been in that particular building, it did have the same layout/structure that did not make me believe it was fake when I first viewed it. Looking at records, it looks like it just sold last year, so perhaps the scammer saved some of the pictures from the original real advertisement.

Welcome to ScamWarners oldskoolgeek I am sorry you were tricked by this scammer and lost money to him. Scammers use what ever they can to try to get money from good people. The photos do net necessarily relate to the scam, though in this case it sounds like the scammer used photos of the actual property.

A scammer's goal is to take money from anyone who doesn't see the scam. Your post will help others to see the scam. Thank you for posting.

Glad to be of help to everyone. It was awful for them to waste my time and get my hopes up when I was looking for a new place to live. And especially awful of them to prey on people during the holidays now.

I received the same email. I checked it out and the house they are "renting" is for sale on a legit website so I guess that's where they found the pictures and everything. It's really a shame on how people are. but here's the emails I received.

I received your response concerning my Advertisement published on Craigslist The house is still available am the owner of the home and i bid for a portion of petroleum land a while back in West Africa and fortunately I just won the bidding so I had to move quickly down to Africa to have my company set up because I still have to rebid for it in the next 4 to 5 years. I came over here with my wife and two kids and before we got here i thought of selling the home but had to change my mind because of my wife, she preferred we had it up on the rental market I had to look for an agent, after getting one, we got a deal but later we found out that he was renting it out for a higher price than what we agreed on and i don't want an occupant that will be paying a lot and not have time for the home because of the price of the home. If you notice, you will discovered that the price we are offering is far below standard price, this is enough for you to know that we are not after the rental fee so I contacted the Agent back and requested for my keys and documents the maintenance of the home is far more important to me I know there is no way I can be sure that you are the right person to live in the house because we won't be able to see before sending you the keys and the documents to occupy the space.. But I just have a feeling that anyone who knows the values of a home should know that maintaining a home is essential, so if you believe you can take good care of the house and handle it like yours then I will be more than happy to let you rent the house.
