Room for Rent and other rental scams
by smew Sun Oct 09, 2011 10:10 am
Hi there,
I think I've detected a new scammer, I can't be 100% sure, but anyway I don't trust this guy.
I had posted an ad on gumtree that I was looking for a room in London for a 2 months stay.
I got a reply from Tony Parks. These are the mails I got from him:

In response to your advert; I'm looking to rent out two furnished rooms in a modern flat. Do let me know if you are interested?

The address is HUNTLEY STREET, LONDON, CAMDEN, WC1E 6AJ ....
Rent is 350 per month while the deposit is equals to a month rent...

I have already told you that the rent Rent is 350 per month while the
deposit is equals to a month rent..Tomorrow is okay to see the flat, i will
be available anytime from 11am, but before the viewing i require a
confirmation proof to show your capability of the rent bills? I have
enclosed the pictures of the flat.

Regards
Tony.

(of course I couldn't come to the viewing, since I'm not in London at the moment..)

Hello xxx, The property its a two bedroom flat with garden,It comprises of a spacious living room, 2 good-sized bedrooms with en-suite shower room, both rooms boast large double glazed windows and vertical blinds. The property features a stylish open plan kitchen/reception fitted with Siemens integral appliances (including dishwasher, fridge/freezer, washer/drier,power sky shower, washing machine,Internet service, oven and hob) including a central heating and close to local amenities. Its available on a furnished basis. Each room has an en-suite bathroom and toilet each, you will only be sharing the kitchen and the living room, two ladies already occupy one of the rooms, their names are Brandy % Bree, they are from the same relatives.........They are in their late 20's...
xxx, I want you to know that the flat has been available from now on, i myself am not in a rush, am only in need of a reliable person who will occupy the room and keep taking good care of the flat just like the other ladies.........I already read your advert and you stated you need the flat 07-01-12. If i am correct that is next year January? I consider long and short term rent, so i am to reserve this flat for you in advance, there is a protocol you have to follow. But first i would like to know your exact move in date and how many months you plan to stay in my flat?

Regards
Tony.

I did some research on his email address as well ([email protected]) and found an ad from him on craiglist:
http://london.craigslist.co.uk/roo/2635124408.html
he claims to have another flat in royal college street, which I think is very suspicious. As well the picture looks very much like out-of-catalogue.

and really, Brandy and Bree living together in one room...this story sounds completely made up to me.
So be careful!!

Hi and welcome to ScamWarners smew

Thanks for posting.
I inserted quotation marks in order to make it more clear. - I hope you don't mind.

Could you please post up the email address that this person used as it will help people who are trying to decide on their new "landlord".
Thanks. ;)

Hi,

I have received a reply to a Gumtree ad from Tony Parks too. Seemed genuine until he asked me to prove my ability to pay in advance, obviously I'm not going to give my personal information to a stranger! I asked him to send photos so I could see the flat as it's always a good way to root out a scammer and sure enough, the photos were of a flat far too nice to be as cheap as he was offering in central London and didn't match the description (he was offering a garden flat yet the room in the photo had eaves which would be from an attic flat). The wording in the email matches the one he sent below pretty much too, and the email address is the same. Avoid this guy!
