This person asks for a deposit payment via Western Union or MoneyGram with a promise that you can have the keys to a property that does not belong to him.

Sounds safe. It's not!

At other times, he will ask for proof that you are able to pay the deposit and rent due to a string of time wasters.
This proof is in the form of a Western Union or MoneyGram payment to a lawyer,a friend or family member.

In either case, if payment is made and you give this person the details, they will collect the money.
You will not hear from them again.

If you are reading this because you are looking for property to rent, and you are in contact with this thief you are probably searching Craigslist, Gumtree or similar listing sites. If you receive any requests from 'Landlords' asking for some kind of payment before viewing, then it will also be a scam. Welcome to ScamWarners red2189. You certainly can make a police report. It might prompt the police to post an article in the newspaper about this kind of scam. Other than that, there is little the police can do. Scammers are not in the jurisdiction covered by your police. This scammer even tells you to send the money to them in Nigeria. Most likely that is their true location and the "long arm of the law" rarely reaches to Nigeria.

I also had a response from "William Wilson" in response to an enquiry I made about a basement apartment in the Greater Toronto Area (in Ontario, Canada). The original listing was legitimate, the actual owner emailed me the day before to let me know it was no longer available, so I am wondering how this scammer was able to get my email address. It's the first time that I've replied to an ad on Craigslist, and I've never had this problem with answering ads on Kijiji. Luckily for me, the ad was full of spelling and syntax errors and gave way too much detail for simply responding to an interest in renting their apartment. Also, there was the red flag of "Nigeria." Besides the fact that the lady that had already rented it wasn't named Tracy.
