Room for Rent and other rental scams

Hello Scam Warners,

Is this a scam?

Thank you for writing in regards to the property for rent. The good news is that the place is still available.

We thought we had a couple confirmed, lease signed, a week ago, but the husband lost his job and they ended up moving out of state. You were the first to reply to us about it since it was put back on the market. With that said, we are giving you the first shot at reserving the place.

As mentioned in the listing, we are requesting a minimum of a 12 month lease. We would entertain longer lease terms, but not shorter. I would simply give you the address and let you go by to see it first, however my husband and I have taken a very strict stance on not blindly giving people the address. We have heard some real horror stories about property management companies who do exactly that, and wind up with a home that is un-rentable due to vandalism, theft etc. Please understand the home has been up kept properly and had a professional, top-to-bottom cleaning and a fresh coat of interior paint. We know that you will love it when you see it!

If you want to go ahead and schedule a time to see the home, simply use the link below and print off a copy of your report. Please do not email me your credit report, as it is sensitive information. Hold onto it until we meet to walk through the property. Your score isn't necessarily important. I am just verifying that there are no evictions within the last 6 months or lease related judgments.

Please use this link to access your report:

We are flexible as far as times go to show you the place. Pretty much any time after 10 a.m. should be fine. Just let me know when you have everything printed out, and be sure to send me a telephone number to reach you at. I will call you to confirm a time to meet.

Thank you again,

I thought it was suspicious that there was no phone number where I could reach her and she wanted me to click on the link above. I replied stating that I was not comfortable clicking on the link and I just wanted to see the place. I never heard from her again.

That is definately a scam. It looks like the website was set up to look like a real credit report site, but it was only registered this month:
Whois information for domain: complete-credit.com

complete-credit.com
IP address: 72.29.94.33
Registrar: INTERNET.BS CORP.
Referrer: http://www.internet.bs
Created: 2012-01-07
Updated: 2012-01-07
Expires: 2013-01-07
Status: clientTransferProhibited

Name Server: ns2.petersenwebdesign.net

Also a credit report score doesn't report issues related to rentals. I will ask our site killers to tale a look at it too.

I received the exact same email today, identical wording, regarding a property in Fort Lauderdale. Was suspicious of the long cover story, lack of phone number, fact that the email came through at midnight, and the fact that the link was was not directly to the credit report home page. I am going to steer clear! I will report it to CraigsList as well.

I received the exact same email today about a place in Fort Lauderdale.. I was suspicious because it was just too explanatory and then I seen it come from freezemail, so I googled said freezemail and I found this post with the exact email and letter... This is just sad!!!

Hi there,

I'm so sorry for this...but the couple that was looking at the place originally, actually came back and put their deposit down. I mentioned that things have been hectic around here... I guess they had been calling me frantically, and my phone was in a spot in our house that, for whatever reason, gets really bad reception...so I didn't even notice they were trying to call back. Anyways, they just got back in touch with my husband and signed the lease, and put down the deposit and everything. I'm really sorry for all this confusion.

We own multiple properties in the area so we will definitely keep you on the top of the list if anything else comes available soon.

Thanks,
