This person asks for a deposit payment via Western Union or MoneyGram with a promise that you can have the keys to a property that does not belong to him.

Sounds safe. It's not!

At other times, he will ask for proof that you are able to pay the deposit and rent due to a string of time wasters.
This proof is in the form of a Western Union or MoneyGram payment to a lawyer,a friend or family member.

In either case, if payment is made and you give this person the details, they will collect the money.
You will not hear from them again.

If you are reading this because you are looking for property to rent, and you are in contact with this thief you are probably searching Craigslist, Gumtree or similar listing sites. If you receive any requests from 'Landlords' asking for some kind of payment before viewing, then it will also be a scam. Please forward the mail to me at the address in my signature line and I will investigate and list them if necessary.

I have been talking to this person for a couple of days. I'm so glad I decided to research him and found that it is a scam. He wanted a payment today and I told him no. I found this home is listed right now through a number of different real estate companies for double the price he said.

I responded to this ad as well. Then did a search and found this posting. House is indeed listed as John Garza as the owner in the property tax roll for our county. Emailed back and asked for local numbers of people for references and name and number of local church members who know them and are sponsoring their "missionary" work. Waiting on a response I am sure I will not receive.........

I didn't like the idea of sending money without ever seeing inside the apartment or getting keys. So, I contacted the Church he was supposed to be associated with and asked about him. I got no answer. After waiting several days, I put in a search for the church again and was led to scamwarners. I have been taken by the Western Union scam before. Cheat me once, shame on you. Cheat me twice, shame on me. So, anytime I see Western Union for making a payment, I am automatically suspicious. Thanks for being here to keep me from making another mistake.

Welcome to ScamWarners Lakara. It is great you trusted your sense that something was wrong. Yes sending money by Western Union for an apartment you have never seen to a person you have never seen is a big red flag.

If you had heard back from the "church" the scammer said they are involved with, it probably would have been the scammer himself and not anyone from a church.

This Idiot actually provide me with an address that is next door to a family member! Talk about busted!! The sad thing is he's actually using a name of a Guy who was from this town, but he and his family moved to Cally!! With technology these days and FB you can find out just about anything or anyone! Better luck next time looser and I hope they catch you!!
