Hi Michelle Banks

You folks seem very nice and I'm inclined to go along with your suggestion,
However there is still the little problem of guarantee, I understand that you
are unwilling to risk the danger of sending the money to a stranger, i am sure
i would be as hesitant if I was in your shoes, here's what I think, I will
reserve the room for your son and meet him when he arrives if you can show
proof of financial commitment, this is what i suggest, make a transfer of the
rent for the first two weeksand the refundable security deposit that's a total
of 520 pounds not to me but to your son. you send it using your name as sender
and his name as receiver and his address as London UK

Then send me the transfer details so I can confirm, this way I will have
assurance that your son will be able and willing to make payments when he
arrives here and I would not have delayed the room for so long for nothing and
it will also give you and your family an assurance because your money is safe
and only your son can receive it once he gets here. so when we meet and he
sees the room and signs the contract, He and I can go to the Money gram office
and he will collect the money and pay me in person.

I hope this is favorable for you, Let me know so that I can proceed and send
you a draft of the tenancy agreement and also my address and everything else
you might like to know.

Thank you

Steph

The thief will tell you that you can rent his accommodation only if you can prove that you have genuine interest. He will ask you send money by wire transfer (normally Western Union) to yourself or a member of the family to show that you have sufficient finances and that you are not a "time waster".

Another variation of this scam is that you need to send (by Western Union) money in order that the keys and other documents can be couriered to you

He will ask you to send him the transfer details.

Make no mistake ! Western Union Transfers can be picked up virtually anywhere in the world and with the minimum of identification. They are almost impossible to trace once the money has been collected. You will never get to see the accommodation or your money again.

If you are reading this because you are looking for property to rent, and you are in contact with this thief you are probably searching Gumtree or similar listing sites. If you receive any requests from 'Landlords' asking for some kind of payment by Western Union before viewing, then it will also be a scam. Please forward the mail to me at the address in my signature line and I will investigate and list them if necessary.

Hi,
I've almost get scammed by this e-mail adress. The add whas on craigslist with the same description of the room (85 pounds, south kensigton, London)
The picture that this person showed to me, which was supposed to be the outside of his house, didn't corespond to the google map street view of her/his supposed adress.
He/she was asking me to send a deposit trough Money Gram.

I was reluctant to trust her/his and when I googled her/his email, I found this forum. Thanks a lot !!

Hello Pamps and welcome to Scamwarners.com

The Scammer will have wanted you to send him money to have keys and documents to be couriered from abroad, or to send money to a family friend to show that you are financially sound and not a time waster. He would have asked you send money by wire transfer (normally Western Union or Moneygram).

These transfers can be picked up virtually anywhere in the world and with the minimum of identification. They are almost impossible to trace once the money has been collected.

You may find this BBC news report and video of interest.... it shows how a similar Room for Rent scam works..
