Room for Rent and other rental scams

I was planning to rent out a beach house in Laguna Beach. Found his ad thru craigslist. Turns out he is a scammer.

We've been emailing back and forth for a couple of weeks now and I was ready to send over the security deposit through Western Union (I know, dumb of me) but I got a tip off from a random emailer telling me that [email protected] is a scammer. Thank God I got that email.

This is the tail end of our conversation.

Hello Lawrence,

Before I send over the security deposit, I realize that I would be sending over a good amount of money over a craigslist ad and I have no guarantee that this is a legitimate transaction and not a scam. I do not want to offend you with any implication that this is a scam, but for my protection and safety, is there some guarantee you can provide so I will feel safer with this transaction?

Lawrence,

I'd like to meet you in person at the Laguna Beach house. I am not too far away and I can hand you the security deposit in cash or money order in person.

-----

Hello mr XXXXX
you really disappoint me. you told me to reserve the property for you. and i did,now you bring unnecessary issuer. if you don't have interest any more please advise . because the owner must confirm the deposit in advance before your chosen date.

Lawrence,

I think it is very reasonable that I see the property in person before I rent it out. If you cannot arrange for an in person meeting and me personally seeing the property, then it will be very difficult for me to feel safe sending you any form of payment.

I then did a google search of [email protected] and his email address came out on the website Modeling Scams, which confirmed to me I was dealing with a scammer.

I'm just glad I got that tip off when I did because I am fairly sure I would have gone through with it all. Thank God again  :D
