Room for Rent and other rental scams
by staysmart Thu May 03, 2012 7:29 am
Quick background story. Me and my family (of three) are moving to the UK on the 14th of May. Urgently looking for accommodations I figured I have nothing to lose by putting up a Wanted ad on Gumtree. So I did, yesterday and have received two replies so far.

One from a person calling himself Willie Chris (using address: [email protected]), but it felt like such an obvious scam that a quick reverse image search and look here revealed their true nature. Thanks, but no thanks buddy.

But then I got an a reply from a Annie Jerkins ([email protected]) that also seems to good to be true. The pictures (I couldn't figure out how to attach them) are well-lit and professionally taken, very suspicious to me. The address given with the instruction for walking distance to Earl's Court doesn't add up.

Yet, the spelling and grammar is (at least to me) much better than scams usually are. Reverse image searching her pictures didn't reveal them anywhere else. So I'm posting here in hopes that someone might be able to shed some more light on the situation. Here's her email and the header for it:

That message came from a Nigerian dialup line. It's a scam. Good on you for posting headers!

Wow, that was quick. Thank you so very much. I here I thought I was smart, how did you figure that out? :)

I looked for an IP address with an obvious first byte :)

I not entirely sure what that means, but thanks for enlightening me anyway.

This one should probably be added to the Rental Scams sections, I searched there before posting but couldn't find any references to this Annie Jerkins, their email address, or keywords from their text. Should I add it myself, or how do I go about making sure no one gets scammed by this person?

You can add it there, but now that you've posted here, it's already findable.

I got an email from williechris today, glad this thread was here to confirm my suspicions.

Reverse image searches showed the photos were from a house in a different city and an amazon page for dining room furniture.
