This person asks for a deposit payment via Western Union, MoneyGram or bank transfer with a promise that you can have the keys to a property that does not belong to him.

Sounds safe. It's not!

At other times, he will ask for proof that you are able to pay the deposit and rent due to a string of time wasters.
This proof is in the form of a Western Union or MoneyGram payment to a lawyer,a friend or family member.

In either case, if payment is made and you give this person the details, they will collect the money.
You will not hear from them again.

If you are reading this because you are looking for property to rent, and you are in contact with this thief you are probably searching Craigslist, Gumtree or similar listing sites. If you receive any requests from 'Landlords' asking for some kind of payment before viewing, then it will also be a scam. Please forward the mail to me at the address in my signature line and I will investigate and list them if necessary.

Now isn't this interesting!

From your post he is renting properties in England.

But he is currently trying to obtain a "deposit" from me for some property he allegedly owns in Removed, California.

What a coincidence. He contacted me through Craigslist.

I'm going to send him an email that says "Interpol and FBI Alert" in the subject line and cc those two agencies and put in some nice affectionate language about location tracking through IP addresses.

Thanks!

Here is the email chain showing how he strung me along...

Hello,

You will have to send the money to me first to secure the house.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for your patience!

Some things just don't communicate well via email perhaps?

How about the evenings of January 3 and 4 for $45?

Hi Brian,

You asked me to clarify my message below.

I think I have a fantastic new approach to top of the line real estate photography, as demonstrated by the attachment.

That image combines a foto of the actual house and curtilage with a dreamy Monet impressionist landscape.

Would you like me to create a similarly charming image, free of charge, on one of the properties you own?

Hi Brian,

Thanks for keeping the door open!

It seems like you might work in the real estate business, which is excellent.

I've pioneered a new technique in photography that combines hyperrealism with impressionism in a historically beautiful and profound way.

The attached image, entitled Removed is an example of that technique, with the house and curtilage (including the fence) being in hyperrealist 21 megapixel HD and the lovely surroundings being draped in Monet French Impressionism.

I think this combination offers some pretty intriguing possibilities for the real estate market in terms of how to showcase high end properties.

What if I arrive early on Thursday and provide you with two images of properties and/or homes of your choosing free of charge by January 15?

Hi Brian, two nights for $25 would be awesome and I would leave the place better than I found it.

I would arrive on Thursday January 3 some time after 4pm and depart Saturday January 5 before 9am.

This year's planting Removed is at Removed.

Hi Brian, I'm very modest means, but extremely tidy and considerate and leave the place better than I found it.

I will be exhausted after my long drive and two full days of climbing hills planting redwoods.

I'm simply looking for a softer bed and a nice shower with some warmth.

I'm trying to support my work in tree planting and in art.

If you care to state a price, I'll be pleased to consider it.

Merry Christmas to you!

Sincerely,
