Room for Rent and other rental scams

Hi!

I am trying to find an apartment in Sweden and it is some time that scammers are contacting me using the same method to try to steal my money.
Of course I know well their tricks and I never sent a euro.

With one of them I tried to play a little bit: He sent me a real-looking contract for an apartment in Stockholm, he put his signature when I asked, he gave me a copy of his ID (fake, of course), he accepted to talk with me on Skype (without showing his face).

I registered his voice and kept track of all the information he gave me.
With all this information is not possible to catch him? What kind of information the police needs to catch them?

Thank you very much for your help

Unfortunately, it's nowhere near that simple.

You don't know the scammer's real name or location. You don't know what he physically looks like. He is not in your country, which means the authorities in your country do not have authority to prosecute, or even to investigate him. Launching an international investigation is a very complicated and expensive process that takes quite a long time, and there is no guarantee that the authorities in his country will even agree to investigate. Typically, very large financial losses are required, before authorities will even consider an investigation, and you have not lost anything.

Even if the authorities in his country investigate, it's not a simple, straightforward investigation. First of all, many scammers operate in areas where law enforcement is corrupt, and can be bought with a bribe. If that doesn't happen, there are still some real challenges to identifying the individual. It is very possible that the IP addresses will lead to an internet cafe shared by dozens to hundreds of other users. Even if the IP can be traced to a single account, the authorities still have to identify and prove that a particular individual was responsible for the correspondence. And if they identify the person, extradition is another long and complicated process, and again, the other country's authorities do not have to agree.
