Hello,

You responded to my Craigslist ad as regard the room which i have available for rent.

I am the only occupant of the flat and i will want to rent out one of the rooms so that i will not be all alone in the flat.

I am 28 y.o professional working female, i am an Oceanographer/Marine Biologist.

My rules in the flat is that you must smoke outside if you are a smoker, no party or loud music in the apartment, so as not to disturb the neighbours, you know when we respect them , they will in return accord us respect too and cleaniness is an order of the day in the apartment.

The room i intend to rent out has it private toilet and bathroom and you will also have a key to your room.

We will have to share the Kitchen(though you have access to everything in the Kitchen) and the living room.

There is TV and sounds system in the living room and the Kitchen is well furnished.

The monthly rent is $800 with everything included and one month security deposit is required before moving-in.

Let me know if this sounds as something that you will be interested in.

This person asks for a deposit payment via Western Union, MoneyGram or bank transfer with a promise that you can have the keys to a property that does not belong to him.

Sounds safe. It's not!

At other times, he will ask for proof that you are able to pay the deposit and rent due to a string of time wasters.
This proof is in the form of a Western Union or MoneyGram payment to a lawyer,a friend or family member.

In either case, if payment is made and you give this person the details, they will collect the money.
You will not hear from them again.

If you are reading this because you are looking for property to rent, and you are in contact with this thief you are probably searching Craigslist, Gumtree or similar listing sites. If you receive any requests from 'Landlords' asking for some kind of payment before viewing, then it will also be a scam. Please forward the mail to me at the address in my signature line and I will investigate and list them if necessary.

Hi,

I have been scammed by this girl.

Just like you describe here.
What do you suggest me to do now?
Is there any way for me to get my money back?

Thanks.

Hello kasm

I am sorry to learn that you have lost money to a Rental Scammer.

I am assuming that you have sent money by wire transfer to prove that you had a genuine interest in the property or that keys could be couriered to you from abroad.

Western Union and MoneyGram transactions are intended only for transactions between yourself and people you know and trust. The transaction details should never be disclosed to a third party.

Despite what a scammer might tell you, Western Union and MoneyGram Transfers can be picked up virtually anywhere in the world and with a minimum of identification, or even none at all. They are almost impossible to trace once the money has been collected.

If you feel that Western Union or Moneygram was negligent in the way that the transaction was processed, then you should file a complaint with them directly and then take independent legal advise.

The scammer has your details: You may receive further e-mails from people offering to recover your lost money. These are called 'Recovery Scams. Eventually you will be asked to pay fees, and if you do pay, you will loose even more money.

Well, in fact, I didn't knew anything about moneygram. I thought it was a common procedure in the US.

There's nothing I can do?

I'm planning to head to a police station to at least denounce her, since I'm getting used to the idea that I won't have my money back. :(

I am pretty sad about this.

Thanks for your reply.
