The thief will tell you that you can rent his accommodation only if you can prove that you have genuine interest. He will ask you send money by wire transfer (normally Western Union) to yourself or a member of the family to show that you have sufficient finances and that you are not a "time waster".

Another variation of this scam is that you need to send (by Western Union) money in order that the keys and other documents can be couriered to you

He will ask you to send him the transfer details.

Make no mistake ! Western Union Transfers can be picked up virtually anywhere in the world and with the minimum of identification. They are almost impossible to trace once the money has been collected. You will never get to see the accommodation or your money again.

If you are reading this because you are looking for property to rent, and you are in contact with this thief you are probably searching Gumtree or similar listing sites. If you receive any requests from 'Landlords' asking for some kind of payment by Western Union before viewing, then it will also be a scam. Please forward the mail to me at the address in my signature line and I will investigate and list them if necessary.

Hello thanks for the reply and interest in my flat.

The room becoming available from NOW, hence we can negotiate the
actual moving in date.

We have also have a cleaner, which is coming to the flat ever 14 days
for the communal areas and your room on request to avoid any issues
normally arising from a shared flat situation.

Throughout the house there is 24/7 unlimited wireless Internet
provision, which also provides access to a large movie collection
database for your pleasure.

I am currently in London to visit my sister who is seriously sick and
I would be spending some days here with her to take care of her kid
but I will be moving back to Rome before your arrival and after you
sign a contract with me and make the advance payment for the
reservation of the room. The ROOM is suitable for both SINGLE and

A contract would be involved in this in which we both have to sign.

I understand that the Western Union charges is much but It is not a
problem for me if you deduct it from the money you are sending. I
would like to put you thought how to make the payment.

All you need to do is to go to the nearest Western Union office to
make the payment of the refundable deposit and Two weeks rental fee in
advance all total of (800EUR) to my name and address. I am currently
in London to visit my sister who is seriously sick and I would be
spending some days here with her to take care of her kid. I think I
have told you that already. I will be leaving London for Rome soon and
I will be in the apartment before your arrival. I will need your
arrival details so as to pick you up from the Airport and take you
straight to the Apartment. The payment has to be made so that I can
securely reserve the room for you till your arrival. Here is the

Western union can be located at Banks, post office, Big supermarket,
and western union outlet office near you.

Here are the steps you need to follow before you could make the money sent.

1 COMPLETE THE 'TO SEND MONEY' FORM
Fill out the appropriate 'To Send Money' form provided and present to
the Agent the original copy of your valid photo identification.

2 PAY FOR YOUR MONEY TRANSFER
Give the Agent the amount of money that you (the Sender) want to send
together with the necessary service fees.

3 SIGN AND RECEIVE YOUR RECEIPT
You will be required to sign a receipt after you have verified that
all the details printed on the receipt are correct. One of the
details printed on the receipt is your Money Transfer Control Number
(MTCN). The MTCN is important and must only be disclosed to your
intended recipient.

4 INFORM YOUR RECEIVER
