This person asks for a deposit payment via Western Union, MoneyGram or bank transfer with a promise that you can have the keys to a property that does not belong to him.

Sounds safe. It's not!

At other times, he will ask for proof that you are able to pay the deposit and rent due to a string of time wasters.
This proof is in the form of a Western Union or MoneyGram payment to a lawyer,a friend or family member.

In either case, if payment is made and you give this person the details, they will collect the money.
You will not hear from them again.

If you are reading this because you are looking for property to rent, and you are in contact with this thief you are probably searching Craigslist, Gumtree or similar listing sites. If you receive any requests from 'Landlords' asking for some kind of payment before viewing, then it will also be a scam. Please forward the mail to me at the address in my signature line and I will investigate and list them if necessary.

This is true. I just got spammed also. the email has changed: They're called Lisa & George and had to move quickly to Ohio. their email is now [email protected]. Luckily, I saw this spam warning before and did not send them the money. They will even send you very nice pictures that give you the urge to simply send the money.

At 700$ for renting a 2 bedroom condo, that's too good to be true. And their number only has a voicemail, no one ever answers: 614-238-8625.

Idiots.

I have been a victim of this scam, I am currently trying to recover my losses however the RCMP have said that i am more than likely "shit out of luck" attached is the email in regards to this scam.

The home comes with two parking spots, a storage unit where you can deposit my furniture (if you don't like it and you want use your furniture). Pets allowed. The home is in perfect living condition and everything is included (water, electricity, Internet, cable, parking, air conditioning, fireplace, dishwasher, garbage) in the rent.

First Month Rent Plus refundable security deposit needing for moving in immediately. If you are not moving in immediately, you would be required to make a down payment of $700 for the security deposit Non- negotiable, to hold property till desired move in date. Also the property is open for short/long term rentals the lease term is negotiable.

Property is available for move in immediately but Unfortunately I would not be present in person to show you the property due to my recent job transfer to Brooklyn,Ny and I dont have a local representative to show the place due to my transfer.I can only attach and send you photos at this time so if you are interested in renting the property and willing to work with me despite my absence kindly get back to me ASAP so I can forward you the Rental Application and the steps in renting my home.

I have established real phone contact with this scammer at the phone number shown in his email responses. Is there any way we can catch this guy? I know most cases are a lost cause, but I actually have spoken to him over the phone. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! thanks!

You can't catch scammers only find them out. They are such liars you can talk to someone and still not know who they are. Some scammers specialise in talking to victims and some may be victims of a job scam. Not all scammers are uneducated and have obvious Nigerian (etc. )accents. It's professional crime you deal with, often carried out by simple criminals who get very little but it beats a life of no hope and they are on a payroll. They have a pay master and a protection racket to support in - old style crime. Believe me, the gangster films and Mafia are the teachers. Suspend reality and know all is possible. African Kray Brothers more like- hand in hand with murder and extortion.
