Room for Rent and other rental scams

So I am upset and so hurt because I have suspicions that I am being spammed... Saturday I seen an ad posted on craigslist about a 1/2 double 2 bedroom with appliances and utilities included for $400 a month!!! Well me and the "Owner" Have been talking for a few days he said he had to leave his place and go on a missionary job in africa.. Said his wife wanted to rent the place instead of selling it... Well stupid me today was going to send him the $400 today in moneygram which I did but he said he could only reach Western Union where he lives so I cancelled out the order got my money back and went to a Western Union where this guy informed me about Nigeria scams.. I have heard of it but never really given it much thought... So I put two and two together and went home searched up some fake rental scams and stories and the christian story adds up!! About how they are doing missionary jobs in africa and would rather rent the house then sell it and to send the money western union and then he'll send the keys and documents... Well the place is near my mothers so I had her drive by it and she said it is empty and for rent... SO Idk if I should believe him or not I also sent him in a email about scams and how his story matches the scammers.. Tomorrow I am going to go talk to the neighbors and also take the renters number down to call so I can aware them... Gave my hopes up for nothing!

Welcome to ScamWarners rebecca45431. I am glad you did some checking and found information about rental scams. This script is typical scammer lies.

Sending money to anyone means you cannot retrieve the money unless it has not been picked up by them. No real landlord would ask for money to be sent by a money transfer service like Western Union or MoneyGram.

Scammers do it because most people are unfamiliar with how money transfer services work. Kudos to the chap at Western Union for warning you! He is the hero of the day. :)

Certainly doing a physical inspection BEFORE giving any money is the right thing to do. You may be able to check the tax roles and find out who owns the property.

Please do NOT tell the scammer any more about what you have learned. They use that information to become better at tricking people like you and me. We don't want that at all.

Please post the email address this scammer is using to contact his victims.

Best to you in finding your next home.

Bubbles, former Scamwarners moderator.

Rest in Peace 24 June 2015.

Gone, but never forgotten.
