Room for Rent and other rental scams

Hi,

I didn't get scammed, but almost. Luckily I take a moment to google after receiving similar emails, got suspicious. Luckily I ended here, but, something is wrong....

Now, what if my personal information (for such as full name, present address, home country address, phone number, age, marital status and copy of my passport) that most rental scammers request is already with them? What do they do with it? What should I do to prevent? Where do I go?

Please advise!

They ask for this information in order to look like real and legitimate landlords.
Think about it, what can you do with this information? Besides using your name in other scams (which is a minor inconvenience), the information isn't worth anything.
The worst thing that you have divulged is a copy of your passport and as I said, it might be used in future scams but no financial or government institution will accept a scan as proof of identity. A hard copy only will confirm your identity.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. ;)

Oh thank God...I can now go back to sleep....

My stupidity! Never going on craiglist!

I received a passport copy from the scammer, claimed that it was his ID, I believe he might be using mine for someone else?

Could they use it for banking (pretend to my guard or whatever) or charging bills to my address etc? I don't know the system here in Europe.

Thanks in advance!

No worries. As I said, financial institutions will not accept a scanned copy of ID - only a hard copy.
As you have seen from experience, the scammer may use your scan in order to back up his story; as he did to to you with someone else's passport.
He can't use it to set up a bank account, gain a loan etc...

Sleep in peace.
