Thanks for the swift reply and the sincere interest you have in my flat. I am willing to have you in my flat as long as you'll take good care of my flat as how it is but it is unfortunate that my past bitter experience of inviting people to come and view or reserve my flat without any form of confirmation of their financial ability and not keeping up to time as at when scheduled, has brought about great loss to me. I have traveled all the way from Ireland to take some interested candidates round my flat because that's where i work with M. Gould (Scunthorpe) Ltd.

Some outside tenants do not have the money to pay the rent and yet they disturb the the landlord to arrange a viewing with their friend or relative who are in Norwich, also some do not meet up with the appointments which has led to the dismissal of some landlords in office by there employees.

Henceforth, my lawyer and i have decided to carry out a simple test on financial ability to pay for my rent before coming for viewing. I would not ask you to send your bank statement. At least 1 month rent and security deposit which is £ 400 which is refundable after your first week stay in my flat, would be required from you to transfer through Western union money transfer agent. You can make the transfer with your name as a sender name and your partner as a receiver to an address in Norwich and you can as well use my flat address.

Once you have done this, scan the receipt to me and if you do not have scanner, you may write out the details on the receipt as i will send it to my lawyer to verify if it's truly genuine and available in your partner's custody, after verification, then we can proceed for the viewing on your arrival and you can easily pick up the money at the nearest Western union outlet when you arrive to Norwich and also, i will refund back to you the cost of transfer when we meet.
I look forward to reading from you soon.
Regards
Mrs Sanchez

The thief will tell you that you can rent his accommodation only if you can prove that you have genuine interest. He will ask you send money by wire transfer (normally Western Union) to yourself or a member of the family to show that you have sufficient finances and that you are not a "time waster".

Another variation of this scam is that you need to send (by Western Union) money in order that the keys and other documents can be couriered to you

He will ask you to send him the transfer details.

Make no mistake ! Western Union Transfers can be picked up virtually anywhere in the world and with the minimum of identification. They are almost impossible to trace once the money has been collected. You will never get to see the accommodation or your money again.

If you are reading this because you are looking for property to rent, and you are in contact with this thief you are probably searching Gumtree or similar listing sites. If you receive any requests from 'Landlords' asking for some kind of payment by Western Union before viewing, then it will also be a scam. Please forward the mail to me at the address in my signature line and I will investigate and list them if necessary.

Hi

Could you please tell me what you know about this person and situation.

I'm looking to rent in Portsmouth and this person is the one that has replied to me, with an almost identical email with a few changes.

Would definitely want to know more,

Thanks for a great resource,

Celia

Welcome to scamwarners celes

It may surprise you to know that Mrs Sanchez is a known internet scammer and is writing to you from an Internet Cafe in Lagos, Nigeria.

He wanted you to send a wire transfer to yourself or family member to show that you have sufficient finances and that you are not a "time waster" and then send him the details as proof.

It would be the scammer who collects your money.

Western Union Transfers can be picked up virtually anywhere in the world and with the minimum of identification. They are almost impossible to trace once the money has been collected, especially when the money has been collected from West Africa. ... you would never get to see the accommodation of your money again

You may find this BBC news report and video of interest.... it's shows how this type of scam works..

Hey
this is the email that I got. There are differences in the email about what is being asked. And I was suspicious right from the very start. I take it, it is still a scam? How does it work this way?

Thanks for the info
Celia

Celes,

This is a Nigerian advanced fee scammer. The person who is emailing you is sitting in an internet cafe in Africa. He is not named Danny Sanchez and he does not own an apartment. What he does is post fake listings for nonexistent apartments (or real apartments that don't belong to him), and/or answers ads placed by apartment hunters. He will then correspond with you as if he were an owner and you were a prospective tenant.

He will ultimately need for you to send a deposit by wire transfer or bank transfer before you can see this apartment. If you send it, he and your money will disappear, and you will be stranded without the money or a place to live. Even if you send it to yourself or a friend, with the information you provide him, he will be able to pick the money up and disappear. The sole purpose of his actions is to scam the "deposit" from you.

Thanks for all the replies.

I've never used Western Union, so am just a bit puzzled at how easy it seems to be from what you are both saying to steal somebody else's money. I would have thought western union would have been more secure?

thanks

Western union is set up so that if you are in a foreign country and are robbed, etc. and don't have ID, your family and friends can send you money. If you have the MTCN and certain other information, you can pick up money without any identification. Some scammers take advantage of that loophole. Your scammer would ask for this information to "verify" the transaction.

Sometimes they don't even need that loophole--they simply have a corrupt friend in the WU office who will dispense the cash to them as long as they have the MTCN number and one or more other details.

Western Union and Moneygram are only intended for sending money to people who you know personally. Which is fairly secure.
Totally insecure if you re dealing with a scammer. Payment can be picked up anywhere in the world, and in places like West Africa, Western Union agents are lax about asking for ID when paying out. And possibly corrupt and given a percentage for not asking questions.

Below are the two e-mails I received today upon replying to the ad on gumtree:

Thanks for the interest you have in my flat. My flat is still available for rent and you can rent my flat as long as you pay your rent at when due. Here are the necessary things you need to know about the rent and deposit.

I have received the following email

Thanks for the reply and the sincere interest you have in my flat. I spoke with my lawyer some couple of minute ago concerning the interest you have in my flat. I would not want you to get me wrong the the idea of making a confirmation of your financial ability is not only my idea and am not collecting any money from you as long as you have not sign a contract neither have i taken you round my flat, my lawyer and i decided to use that process and i can't violate my lawyer procedure.

However,it is unfortunate that my past bitter experience of inviting people to come and view my flat without any form of confirmation of their financial ability and not keeping up to time as at when scheduled, has brought about great loss to me. I have traveled all the way from Ireland to take some interested candidates round my flat because that's where i work with M. Gould (Scunthorpe) Ltd. It is still much available but i will prefer to have some deposit before arranging for viewing. will only be asking you to send the deposit money of a month rent and security deposit to your friend or partner here in UK through western union. You will get back to me by scanning the receipt of the payment you made to your friend or partner so that my lawyer can verify if its truly that the money is available in your friend's or partner's custody. Then we can arrange for the viewing of my flat at your suitable time.

Looking forward to read from you soon.

My Reply >> Im Sorry But We Are Unable To Hand Over Money Before Moving Into A Property Never Mind Before Viewing One, Its Abit Far Fetched If You Ask Me. Asking Some One To Hand Over £500 Before Even Veiwing It. I Really Doubt Some One Is Going To Rent Your Flat.Due To It Looking Like A Scam or Actually Being One
