Room for Rent and other rental scams
by dumbscam Fri Apr 05, 2013 11:20 am
Hey, I just posted a room for rent and got an e-mail this morning.
it is as follows:

May I know if the place is still available. Please reply to my direct email below or get back to me with your personal email.

the email address and directions on how to e-mail back seemed off, google search and this website popped up. (Thank goodness!) I am curious; since I haven't replied yet, should I contact the police? I know my grandparents had to do a similar thing to help Canadian police catch a scammer up there. just looking for some advice but regardless to if this scammer is caught, the creators and users of this website saved me (metaphorically speaking) so thank you all very much,
Campbell

Welcome to ScamWarners dumbscam, you certainly can contact the police. They will at least write up a report. Whether they can catch the scammer is uncertain at this time. It depends on the evidence and the burden of proof. Thank you for posting this information.

My first indicator is that they ask if the room is still available... at the top of my ad I posted an "Updated on" date... Everytime I renew the ad (sometimes more often) I go in & edit the date to be current.
Then at the end of my ad I posted "If this ad is still up, the rooms are still available!!"

one other thing to look for is when you hit reply (off of the original email), see if the 'reply to' email matches the original senders email. (unless they use the Craigslist "anonymizer")... almost all of them change email hosts & the name of the "person" changes as well...

Also ~ it may not have come from the craigslist email system, if it doesn't have the three links down at the bottom (this one doesn't) allowing you to report email as "Spam", "Scam", etc...

I won't be replying to this one.

Thanks everyone. I got the same e-mail (from the same person [email protected]) and it seemed rather odd. I'm going to ignore it since other people are running into the same issue.

FWIW, I also just received this email after posting a room for rent ad yesterday. The grammar seemed a bit "off" and a google search led me to this page. At least the word is out!

I am so happy this came up on a general search for Laurie Lambert! I just posted a room for rent in Indio CA and received the exact same email. Her contact information was a little different though:

Posted a room in Colorado

Just received the same email from a craigslist room post I had. I got this email this morning from Laurie Lambert from Edinburg, and her father was needing my info for check purposes. I didn't give her my info but I did click on her email

"[email protected]"

and something loaded into my system??? I'm hoping it wasn't a keystroke virus??

I feel foolish... but I'm here so you don't make this error about this room scammer too.

Be careful and good luck out there be cautious as I have now gotten four scams I didn't respond to in two weeks I did report these to IC3.org as a complaint so it is reported with the Government entity.

Hello.I received a msg. from this Laurie Lambert.
I did respond to the gmail address.
Is this a problem?

Thank you.Mark.

You have nothing to worry about. Your gmail account may receive more scams, but that's about it.

Is the scammer using the same email address as before? If there are any new email addresses, could you please post them?

Need to post photos? http://scamwarners.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=3219

Glad I did a google search of the email address and found your site. Posting this to let people know it is still out there. After listing a room to rent yesterday, I received this suspicious looking email this morning.
