This person asks for a deposit payment via Western Union, MoneyGram, pre-paid credit card or bank transfer with a promise that you can have the keys to a property that does not belong to him.

Sounds safe. It's not!

At other times, he will ask for proof that you are able to pay the deposit and rent due to a string of time wasters.
This proof is in the form of a Western Union or MoneyGram payment to a lawyer,a friend or family member.

In either case, if payment is made and you give this person the details, they will collect the money.
You will not hear from them again.

All the details such as names, addresses, pictures etc. that the scammer uses in order to back up his story, are stolen from elsewhere.

If you are reading this because you are looking for property to rent, and you are in contact with this thief you are probably searching Craigslist, Gumtree or similar listing sites. If you receive any requests from 'Landlords' asking for some kind of payment before viewing, then it will also be a scam. Please forward the mail to me at the address in my signature line and I will investigate and list them if necessary.

I have had a similar experience of starflats:

Thanks for your interest and answer to my question.Viewing will not be a problem if you can meet my test because of my bad experience with bad tenants not having money to pay rent also could not keep to there end of deal and providing fraudulent employers reference to convince me of having a stable job! scan fake document to me. Its really time wasting because i am a very busy person and do not really have much time to waste.

I have also traveled all the way from where i work to take some interested candidates round my flat which they didn't turn up. Also made reservation for candidate without condition to make sure my flat is available and also make sure am available to take candidate round my flat, after doing that, they will refused to turn up, never new they are dealing with multiple landlord, they will later informed me they have found a good location close to their office or school after turning other interested candidate down to make sure i keep to our end of deal.

Henceforth my Lawyer and i have decided not to take that anymore, so any interested candidate must pass through our financial test before viewing/reservation for any interested candidate bank statement is not also acceptable because they do provide fake of it. Please, understand that i am NOT asking you to pay me BEFORE you view/reserve the flat. But the security deposit of £600 which is refundable would be required from you to transfer to someone close to you through money gram using your name as the Sender and your friend or family member's name as the Receiver in the UK premises. Once you have done this, scan the receipt to me and if you do not have scanner, you may snap the receipt with your phone and send it to me as i will forward it to my lawyer to verify if it's truly genuine and available in the receiver custody.

Note the money must not be taken out of money gram by the receiver till my lawyer verify it, and after verification by my lawyer, i will ask you to inform the receiver to pick up the money and proceed with the viewing any day you prefer in the evening.

I will refund back to you the cost of transfer upon viewing. We are sorry for any inconvenience we must have cost you is due to my bad experience with bad tenant.

Kindly let me know if my explanation is well understood.

Best Regards
Mr/Mrs Darcy
