Room for Rent and other rental scams
by Alex03 Fri Sep 12, 2014 7:38 pm
Ive been searching for an apartment in Lima, Peru because I will be moving there. I found one that is in a safe and secure area. A more than perfect price. A too good to be true situation. Here is the email conversation between him and my wife. When she forwarded the email to me (her still thinking that it was a legitimate transaction) I read it and immediately assumed that there was something sketchy about this...

Hello again,
Thank you for answer me so fast.
The price for one month of rent is 580 $ including all the utilities costs ( water, gas, electricity, Internet, cable TV, parking space, maintenance) .Of course I would need one warranty month as well of 580 $ , which you would get back when you will leave the apartment(you will have to give me at least 30 days notice).

I am not interested to make a lot of money from the rent as I am interested to find a tenant that will take goof care of the property.I wish to rent my apartment to some nice and responsible people . You should also know that I appreciate sincerity very much.
Because I didn’t had time to find a trustworthy person, don’t have any friends in the area to send the keys I found an alternate solution in order to close the transaction safe for the both of us ,a company who will handle the payment and keys + contract delivery, it is an international company called DHL Property, please visit the website( http://www.dhl.co.uk/en/logistics.html ).

They will provide assistance in handling the payment and delivery of the Keys and Lease Agreement. With this procedure you will be able to check the apartment and after that ,they will pay me or no depend if you will keep the apartment or not. This process will take maximum 2-3 days.
To avoid any misunderstanding i will be glad to explain you step by step how the viewing procedure work if you really are interested.
Looking forward to receiving your response.
Thank you

Hello,
Thank you for your email. First ,let me give you some info about my apartment.
The apartment is still available. This is the link of my ad:
http://urbania.pe/alquiler-casa-magdale ... or-1467247

It’s fully furnished and recently renovated, as you could see from the photos.
You can either use my furniture or put it in the cellar and use yours. Two parking spots are included.
The place is fitted with air conditioning, dishwasher, cooker, refrigerator, washing machine, LED TV, vacuum cleaner etc.I bought this apartment for my son during his studies practice in Peru, but now he’s back in England permanently, so I’m renting it out for unlimited period.
The minimum contract period is 1 month and maximum is unlimited.
Now, a little bit about myself: My name is Eldon Forde and I’m a 52 year old Doctor from London, England
Unfortunately, my job doesn’t allow me to do any travel for the next few months, so I will not be able to come and meet you personally for a while.
However, I hope this issues won’t affect the rental at all. I can make arrangements to rent the apartment from London (on my expense of course).

I hope the email wasn’t too long, I just like to be as thorough as possible.

I will wait your reply .
All the best from United Kingdom!

I have had the exact same experience with this guy ! Literally just now, over the last 4 days we have been emailing to arrange this apartment. He sent me exactly the same emails as you got, word for word (except now the "apartment" is $600).
The email address he is now using is :
[email protected]
I first saw the apartment ad on :
http://urbania.pe/alquiler-departamento ... do-1517194
Isn't there something that can be done/catch this guy ? Like notify Urbania.pe at least so they can take the ad down geez.
Almost fell for it, after 2 emails, the 3rd gave it away.
