Thanks for the interest you have in my flat. My flat is still available for rent and you can rent my flat as long as you pay your rent at when due. Here are the necessary things you need to know about the rent and deposit.

Rent : £ 60.00 pw
Security Deposit: £ 400.00 (Returnable at the end of a month stay in my flat)
Utility bills inclusive ( water, gas, council tax, TV license and wireless Internet) Utility Cost : £ 0.00 pcm

However, my flat is fully furnished in and out with all necessary house use. At this stage that you want to rent my flat, i need to know some few question about you. Can you take care of my flat as it is? How many months do you intend to rent and pay for? Do you have references in Bristol?

Kindly reply for further information and i would like to know where you are coming from to stay in my flat.

Regards
Mr/Mrs Wilson

The thief will tell you that you can rent his accommodation only if you can prove that you have genuine interest. He will ask you send money by wire transfer (normally Western Union) to yourself or a member of the family to show that you have sufficient finances and that you are not a "time waster".

Another variation of this scam is that you need to send money (again via Western Union) in order that the keys and other documents can be couriered to you

He will ask you to send him the transfer details.

Make no mistake ! Western Union Transfers can be picked up virtually anywhere in the world and with the minimum of identification. They are almost impossible to trace once the money has been collected. You will never get to see the accommodation or your money again.

If you are reading this because you are looking for property to rent, and you are in contact with this thief you are probably searching Gumtree or similar listing sites. If you receive any requests from 'Landlords' asking for some kind of payment by Western Union before viewing, then it will also be a scam. Please forward the mail to me at the address in my signature line and I will investigate and list them if necessary.

Date: Thursday, 22 July, 2010,

Thanks for the reply, transfer a month rent and the deposit(£240+£400) through western union to your friend or your relative's Once you have done the transfer, scan the receipt to me and if you do not have scanner, you may write out the details on the receipt as i will send it to my lawyer to verify if it's truly genuine and available in your friend's or relative's custody, after verification, i will ask you to tell you friend to pick up the money and schedule a convenient day for the viewing. If eventually you don't want to proceed with the rent, i promise to return the cost of the transfer back when we meet, here is the procedure

1.Locate the nearest Western union outlet around you.
2.Pick up the form of transfer and fill in the details which needs to be filled and return back to the post master.Details needed on the form are {sender name;your name and address.}{receiver name and address}
3. Return back to the post master with the cash you are transferring to your partner or friend and wait for the receipt to be returned back to you.
4. Scan the receipt to me so that i can forward it to my lawyer to check it if its truly genuine and available in your friend's custody.
5. After it has been confirmed valid, then we can proceed with the viewing and i would be responsible for the cost of the transfer as well.

Kindly let me know when the transfer would be done so that i can get my lawyer informed.

Regards
Mr/Mrs Wilson

NOTE:Please remember western union agent may ask you the reason for sending the money tell them that is for personal use, not for renting a flat, in this way you will pay lower charges and i promise to return the cost of the transfer without any deduction.

This guy tried to scam me today. Is there a way to report him?

Thanks

Welcome Kazwaz,

Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do in terms of reporting. Since you haven't lost any money, technically a crime hasn't been committed at this point.

But the truth is, in these particular scams, the scammer is usually located in another country (often in western Africa or Malaysia), and is operating under completely fake details, meaning an in-depth investigation would be required to locate the criminals. Police in your country do not have the power to investigate those crimes--an investigation would require cooperation from multiple governments, and is expensive and time-consuming. Because of this, law enforcement will typically only pursue cases involving actual losses of very large sums of money--the amount varies, but here in the US, that is typically hundreds of thousands of dollars.

ive just got scammed by this man or something. and, I was actually taken my money around 620GBP , is there any other opthion that I can do ???? i mean, I did everything ... I've already called local police, and western union, so far. I am so frustrated that anyone wasn't helpful. If i need, i will try to sue western union. I know I was so stupid though i think it wasn't all my fault. because western union should have checked carefully and identify the one who picked up the transfer money. so, can you help me that ??

Sorry to see you here bora under such circumstances but welcome anyway.
Dotti explains it well. Unfortunately, It's the same here in the UK.
As you divulged the MTCN to another party, Western Union will not want to know.

He is trying to scam on gumtree in Edinburgh. I initially thought that it was an amazing flat, but then realized that if it sounds too good to be true it probably is, so I looked up the email address which sent the reply after my initial inquiry and found myself here. This is the message I was sent, it's so badly spelled and composed that it made me instantly wary, also the initial ad does not have any details of ridiculously low the rent is, which was another point of suspicion when I received this follow-up email. I am now reporting him on gumtree.
