Among the classic scams listed in LA and SF like we've listed here several times, there are many listing that are as too good to be true rent rate, that are exceptional but just within the margins of believability. Nice flats and houses, with pictures, and everything except the address. Like these out of towner-scammer, these refer you to a request more info link, and or a phone number to call. If you get someone live or they call you back you're told you have to pay a nonrefundable subscription of $50, that won't guarantee you results. There is no local office where you would meet someone face to face or be able to look at a directory of these fabulous apts. Since it doesn't ad up, I haven't done this, so they haven't gotten any money from me, but I have to admit, I was tempted.
Surprisingly, I haven't been able to find any significant complaints online, that explains what's really going on.
By the way, here in The Bay Area everyone tends to say, "oh! Well that's crags list!" implying that if you do any kind of business on CL and get burned it's your own fault, but there are a unlimited list of high end Real Estate companies, like Trulia, Rentals.com, Zillow, Realtor.com, Zumper, Homes.com, Apartments, and PadMapper, and more, all list these scams, like everybody else. I think what they're all doing is to stay relevant and try to compete with CraigsList by republishing ads from CraigsList. in Fact PadMapper's business model is to do that exclusively. I don't think anyone has a magic list of rental choices not listed on CraigsList, but one thing is clearly true. NO ONE IS FILTERING OUT THE SCAMS IN THE BAY AREA, THEY JUST PUBLISH EVERYTHING THAT COMES IN. That's not right! someone should!
