The thief will tell you that you can rent his accommodation only if you can prove that you have genuine interest. He will ask you send money by wire transfer (normally Western Union) to yourself or a member of the family to show that you have sufficient finances and that you are not a "time waster".

Another variation of this scam is that you need to send (by Western Union) money in order that the keys and other documents can be couriered to you

He will ask you to send him the transfer details.

Make no mistake ! Western Union Transfers can be picked up virtually anywhere in the world and with the minimum of identification. They are almost impossible to trace once the money has been collected. You will never get to see the accommodation or your money again.

If you are reading this because you are looking for property to rent, and you are in contact with this thief you are probably searching Gumtree or similar listing sites. If you receive any requests from 'Landlords' asking for some kind of payment by Western Union before viewing, then it will also be a scam. Please forward the mail to me at the address in my signature line and I will investigate and list them if necessary.

I am the owner of 502 Hove Mansions, London Road, Sea Point and I can confirm that this is a scam. I have also been informed of the followings scams, details below. I do rent this flat out but never without signing a lease agreement and viewing the flat in person, if you are not dealing with me, then you are not dealing with the owner of this flat.

BEWARE OF THE FOLLOWING SCAM

I rent a flat in Hove Mansions, London Road, Sea Point and I have had a Rev. Da Silva copy my ad and pictures in an internet scam for attemtpted fraud. I am posting this in order to try and raise awareness for this man and scam so that people will know who is is. If you see his ad, please report it to have it removed. He used a variety of different email addresses and names but the basics stay the same. If you do deal with him, you can send the info to the Police : [email protected]

As the owner for this flat I would only ever reply with an email from mailto:[email protected] . Remember you can ask as many questions as you want about a rental and if you are not happy about the answers and are suspicious then request more proof. Even proof that the person that you are dealing with owns the property in question. No legit landlord would use Western Union or Moneygram to receive a deposit. You may use a Bank Transfer as that will have a bank account at the other end with details of the account holder. Also the Landlord should be willing to provide you of proof that he is who he says he is, like provide a scan of a SA ID or Passport. Beware of fakes.
