The scenario you describe is typical of a rental scam. If you have only given him your name and address (even if you have given a phone number) there is nothing to worry about. All of that information is publicly available anyway. You will likely see an increase of scam emails, and may receive some scams by snail mail or telephone, but that is the most you should expect.

Just tell this scammer you are no longer interested, and drop all correspondence with him. Don't answer him if he tries to contact you, and eventually he will go away to focus on victims who are going to pay.

If he is not listed here, please post his emails to you (remove all of your information), as he is likely trying to scam others using the same name, and almost certainly is running other scams using the exact same email scripts. Posting these will help others to avoid being scammed.

Undoubtedly a scam.

I was just trying to think of a way to uncover scammers with particular reference to ones pretending to have UK properties for rent.

One way could be to ask for the Council Tax reference number and amount payable, which I believe no scammer would know or be be able to look up, but I'll do some research on it.

It's then possible to double check the authenticity here

Generally scammers are witless morons and won't do a lot of research or work, otherwise they wouldn't spend their time scamming.

Let me refine this method of uncovering UK property rental scammers. The problem being that most people only come here after they've been scammed and don't come here for advice before being targeted.

Hello k_a_y, and thank you for posting the emails you received - as GomerPyle says, it is definitely a scam.

Could you also post the email address which those scam mails were sent from? Then, if other people google that email address, it will lead them here, and they too can realise that this is a scam.

I'm glad you recognised the new email you received as a scam also. If you post that one as well, and the email address it came from, that too will warn others about the scam.

Scammers are ignorant morons, which is why they do what they do but. like mosquitoes, they learn to be good and effective at the one purpose they have in life, which is to cause other people suffering and harm.

The minute you're offered Western Union as the payment method that's the final clear indicator that you're in touch not only with a scammer, but a low level witless idiot. There are enough signs in hi sopening mails that he is unaware of Western life, and if you're thinking of planning to make any upfront payment you need to consider a few questions and checks to make beforehand.

More sophisticated scammers will do their homework on a property beforehand and may even have the use of a bank account, so you can be thankful that you came up against the 'bargain basement' scammer. There are much more dangerous 'sharks' out there but you can avoid falling for any of them by asking reasonable questions and performing a few simple checks.

For a UK property I would ask for the Council Tax billing reference which any owner would know and have no difficulty quoting to you. The advantage is that you can double check it and it would be one heck of a smart scammer who knew how to do that, or even knew what you were talking about.

Mr [email protected] is still around and is still trying this scam.

After placing an advert on Gumtree for a 2-bedroom property in Norwich. I got a e-mail from this individual, everything sounded good till he asked me for the home application. I almost filled it in but then thought I'd just google his name. Thank god I did.

Beware of [email protected]! He got my partners hopes up as she thought she had found our home. Now I have to tell her otherwise.
