Hi srim. Can you please post the email header? Has this Pamela given you a phone number?
I do have a sneaky suspicion about this one. But having said that, some more info would be needed to be sure
by Gus Tue Sep 13, 2011 12:25 pm
I agree with jolly_roger, there are some things about this message that look VERY suspicious, but a little more information would help us confirm for sure that this is a scammer. If they sent you any more emails can you please post them here too, as this will help a lot.

Hi srim,

this is definitely a scam. Here is the trick:
It interests me to make you know that my family will help
make arrangement for all your necessary Travel Documents needed in
order for you to get down here in good time, My husband will arrange
for the documents and the fee in a short space of time.

The scammer will ask for fees to organise your "travel documents" - fake visa, fake airline ticket ... and then he will tell you that you need to make a deposit of money to proof that you can support yourself. He will promise you that you will get the money back once you arrive.

Please come back any time you need help, we are glad to give advice.
by Chris Fuller Wed Sep 14, 2011 2:27 am
The scammer calling themself Pamela Osbourne is writing from a Gmail address, so the header won't tell us anything useful. This is the email address used:

From: Pamela Osbourne <[email protected]>
Subject: NANNY/AUPAIR: CALL TO TAKE CARE OF MY FAMILY

For au pairs looking for a position in the USA, please read these US Government webpages about the US Au Pair Program:

http://exchanges.state.gov/jexchanges/p ... upair.html

http://j1visa.state.gov/participants/how-to-apply/

Do not send money to any agency, embassy, lawyer, or other person introduced to you by a potential host family.
by Chris Fuller Tue Sep 20, 2011 2:13 am
Pamela Osbourne is now using a different spelling of their false surname in the 'From' field and a different surname in the text of the email, plus a new email address. The scammer states that no money will be required for travel documents - but will invent a different reason for money to be paid or a money transfer to be made. Please read here:

Overview of Au Pair Scams

for examples of the many ways that a scammer can steal money from an au pair.

This email was not sent from the USA; it was sent from Nigeria, as proven by the IP address: 41.71.148.144 - Lagos, Nigeria.

From: Pamela Osborne <[email protected]>

Hello,
I am pleased by your response to me. I will never ask for money to process any travel documents and i don't expect the nanny to ask me of that. Instead i will just make sure that all the documents needed are sorted out and by the time the visa is ready i will show to you and ask my sister in law sheila to send to you and to the USA embassy in your country. First of all i wanna say thanks for your reply, I commend your interest in my family, I contacted 5 people, i have only gotten response from 2 people for now so its either your or the other that will eventually have to get the job. i will pick the best person that i think will fit well into my family.
Like i said you will sure have your separate room to yourself if you want to live with us as a family.. Well my family needs your attention but it all depends when you are ready to come down here we will be happy to see you at the appointed time that best fits you.
I am a very busy woman and all i want is to have someone who can look out for my daughter who is only 2 years old. I get so busy with my job that i hardly have the space to check on my kid so carefully so i also need someone with us here to do the part of a mother when i am away from home. i am so pleased that you have agreed to come and be with my family I assure that we will be like a family together.
Indeed my husband has well agreed that he would finance the procurements of your visa documents needed for your traveling down here He has a sister that works with an international consulate here in California, with the help of sheila we would be able to arrange for the documents you would need to get down here, when done all documents would be sent to the USA embassy in your country, so you can just walk in there and get your visa stamped on your passport. All that would be done from here efficiently so you don't need to bother for any expenses. I am trying to explain this whole well to you now so you don't get it twisted, we are a very decent family and we love our reputation as such we would not want anything to soil this reputation. I will let you know how to contact with Sheila at the right time so she can do all the paper work as soon as she can, well i am sure she wouldn't be needing more than 4 working days to get ll necessary documents ready, so she said and assured Dan. she will just make everything see the the US consulate as an express need to get over here. I hope you already have your international passport.
You can stay with my family as much as you want, thanks for your well detailed background briefing..it is absolutely nice to read from you. I am currently so close to my computer at this time so if you can email back be sure to get a response from me immediately...i am always quick to respond to my correspondents.
My husband and i are very good people and we love sincerity and patience in all we do.

You need to know this about my family.

Our family name is Fortune, I am Pamela Fortune, We live in Newport Beach California 20432 Santa Ana Ave #7, Newport Beach Ca 92660. california usa.. I work as a nutritionist in a public health organization in Los angeles. my husband on the other hand is a Medical Doctor. I am 34 and my husband is 37 his name is Daniel but we call him Dan. My child is a baby Girl, her name is Nicole. She likes playing around with toys..Well for now she doesn't like pets in any form so we haven't gotten any pets yet..I like dogs but cant have any yet cos Nicole doesn't feel okay with Dogs yet. Awaiting Your Response.

Sheila at [email protected] is also fake, and is part of the scam.

From: Pamela Osborne <[email protected]>

Hello,
I hope everything is well with you. Well I am happy everything is going well and i have been able to discuss with Sheila and she has said she will be able to get the visa and other document ready just within some days because she is actually working on something of that lately so she would just also devote some time towards ensuring that yours is ready too. she says she will do all documentations and get the USA immigration to issue a visa for you from Here and they will afterward send it down to the US Embassy there in your country, it is from there you will get the visa stamped on your international passport, well as i have been made to know she calls it an automatic appearance as no much questions would be asked, the only important thing is that you get an appointment with the consulate and go pick your documents.
sometimes we have visitors and other kids from the extended family so the work could get a little bit more tedious i am so happy you have agreed to help with a bit of the home chores.. Hopefully you you we can get all documents as soon as possible and it will be sent to you immediately and that will just mean that everything is set for your traveling down here , you will only just have to get your flight fare and travel down here. I want you to email her and you both can communicate immediately on how she needs to get all documents done like she has said her email address is [email protected] you should email her and make her know that you are are the person i spoke to her about earlier and that you are the family's aupair to be soon.

God bless you.

Here is an email from the fake Sheila Carolyn. It was also sent from Nigeria: IP address 41.71.145.118 - Lagos, Nigeria.

The scammer writes:

To become a legal au pair in the USA you need to have a J1-Visa. You can only apply for this J1-Visa if you go through one of the 13 federally designated au pair agencies. From these agencies you can get a DS-2019 form with which you can apply for a visa. I have hence been linked with the DS-2019 form by some agencies.

The scammer has not been linked by any agency. To become an au pair in the USA, please contact one of the designated agencies directly. You can find a list of them here, and go to their websites by clicking on their names in the first column:

From: sheila carolyn <[email protected]>

Hi

Bare with me that i have been too busy to reply your letter. Pam just contacted me and was angry at my attitude to the documents procurement but like i told her i also want to let you know that i have taken the time to gather all information and gather all documents needed for me to get your documents processed in the best way.
I need to make you understand that I am sheila Carolyn, i am foster sister to Dan, Pam's husband. They already spoke to me about you and all they want. With the way everything has gone so far, this is not a difficult situation to handle and like i told Dan and Pam i will need just about 2-3 days to get everything prepared, i will make my co-workers do extra work just to make sure that we can get the documents processes as express and urgent ones.
After much discussion so far with My bro Dan, I have spoken to some other guys in the cultural exchange department and they have all given me suitable means to get it done as soon as the stipulated time.
Maybe you may also wish to know some few things about the position you are about to be employed to.

An Au Pair is usually a foreign national who has entered the USA to live with a family while improving his/her knowledge of the English language. He/she is treated as a member of the family's household rather than an employee and, in return for limited childcare and housework duties (no more than 40 hours per week for), is given an allowance. The Au Pair must be given his/her own room with full-board in the family home, at least 2 days off work per week and adequate time to attend English lessons. An au pair is usually a young person with no formal childcare qualifications and should not be given sole care of children under the age of 2.

Young people from almost all countries can become an au pair in the USA, except from those countries which have no diplomatic relations with the USA.
Travel costs and other costs: The travel costs will be paid by the agency to which the host family makes payments for this purpose. The au pair also pays a fee to the agency plus a deposit at some agencies which will be returned at the end of the year. If the au pair leaves before the stipulated time, he/she has to bear the costs for the flight back to his/her home country and will not get the deposit back. But in your situation your host family has made it clear that they will shoulder the whole expenses so you are lucky to have Dan and Pam

Pocket money: Not lesser than 195.75 USD per week

Duration of stay: Au pairs may come to the United States for a minimum of 12 months. A thirteenth month is normally added to travel across the country. Au pairs have also the possibility of a one-time extension for an additional period of 6, 9, or 12 months.

Preconditions: The au pair may tender needs a certificate of health, or certificate of good conduct, or driver's license or experiece in the field of child care.

Age: The au pair should be 16 to 50 years old.

Working hours: The au pair works up to 45 hours per week and not more than 10 hours per day.

Holidays / weekends: The au pair is entitled to 1 1/2 days off per week and one weekend off per month (beginning Friday evening and ending Monday morning). During a stay of 12 months, the au pair gets 2 weeks (10 working days) of paid holiday.

Courses during the stay: The au pair must attend eight training hours on child safety and 24 hours of training on child development before going to the host family. Furthermore, the au pair must take part in further education courses and the family must pay up to $700 per year for this purpose. Some agencies offer language courses to the au pair which might also be obligatory.

Educational background: The au pair must have good knowledge and needs a high school diploma or a corresponding education.
If the au pair is required to look after a child under the age of two, the au pair has to demonstrate that she has at least 200 hours of child care experience with infant children of that age group. If the au pair is required to care for a child younger than 3 months, it is obligatory that a parent or other adult is present during that time. In this case Nicole is already 2 years old so this does not apply with with.

Insurance: The host family must pay a health insurance for the au pair. It is advisable that the au pair effects an accident insurance and a third party insurance for the stay.

Visa: To become a legal au pair in the USA you need to have a J1-Visa. You can only apply for this J1-Visa if you go through one of the 13 federally designated au pair agencies. From these agencies you can get a DS-2019 form with which you can apply for a visa. I have hence been linked with the DS-2019 form by some agencies.

There are so many documents to be done to enhance a free and easy entrance into America as an aupair or nanny or babysitter. I will mention some documents for you here for you just to know. All the documents would be arranged for immediately i get to the office today.

There must be a letter of invitation from the family

Au Pair Letter is suitable where a family wishes to invite someone to join their family as an Au Pair. The working times, allowance and other conditions meet the standards recommended by the American Au Pair Agencies Association.

The host family should complete the letter of invitation and send it to the Au Pair who will then be able to use the letter to support his/her application for a visa. Even if the Au Pair does not require a visa to enter the USA as an au pair, this letter is still useful since it sets out the terms under which you are offering the Au Pair position and can therefore help avoid misunderstandings.

The recommended weekly allowance for an Au should not be lower than 195.75 USD (towards the top end in the USA area). Any sum substantially lower could suggest that the Au Pair is filling the position of a domestic slave which might not require a work permit and may result in the host having to register as an employer and pay National Insurance and PAYE.

This Au Pair Letter is suitable for use in USA and includes clauses covering:

accommodation
allowance
duties (including babysitting)
holidays
holiday pay
start date and duration of position
working times.
accommodation
benefits
duties
expenses
holiday entitlement
probationary period
rates of pay
sickness
statutory disciplinary and grievance procedures
termination of employment
working times

Other documents to be done are also

Codice fiscale (ID): this ID is needed to be employed as an au pair
register with the American National Health Service on a voluntary basis
open a bank account
The American Tax ID (Codice fiscale) can be obtained from the locally competent tax authority.

The following documents have to be submitted:
a valid residence permit
a copy of an ID card/passport

Liability Insurance: This insurance is held responsible for damage which is unintentionally caused to a third party within the context of private and family life. This insurance is also liable for harms which have been caused with malicious intent by an au pair girl or boy as well as in case of an accident that happens to the au pair boy or girl while he/she is taking care of the host family's child/children.
Administrative procedure for Non USA citizens

Work permit: Au pairs from all around the world need a work permit

Residence Card: citizens don't have to apply for a Residence Card. To apply one must visit at the locally competent Police Headquarters and any more. Those who wish to stay in America for 3 months or less can declare their presence at the locally competent Police Headquarters.

I have taken my time to inform you of all these so you know the amount of work that i need to put in place just for within three days. I owe the family an obligation to do all this so i will put all hands on deck to make this happen as they want you around as soon as possible. I will prepare all of this documents from here.

You will only have to send to me scanned page of a very good passport photograph and your bio-data details, i hope you understand what a bio-data form is and you will also need to send a scanned page of your international passport to include passport number and date issued and expiration.

Thanks.

Agencies get their money from clients who register with them looking for someone to work for them. On successfully finding someone to do the job the agency then gets a fee for the job they did in finding YOU. The client may have paid a deposit from their own money to pay for the Agencies time and advertising. The client would know this in advance and be dealing with a legitimate firm, because after all it's their children. Once the advert is placed all contacts for the work are done via the agency and the agency would then contact you when you express your interest via them. One thing that the client will not do is contact you directly and bypass the Agency, because this is how the Agency earns its fees which it charges to the client. You will not have to pay any fees at all to an agency working for a client. The Agency will check you are able to do the job, and able to get into the country for it. They will not waste client time, their time, and your time if it is not possible to employ you anyway. Once all that is in order you go to the Embassy to get your visa. You will only pay at the Embassy and not by Western Union , Moneygram or any other means. You might have to do an online form at the countries Border Agency website, but it will be the OFFICIAL SITE. It may be done via a firm called VFS GLOBAL http://www.vfsglobal.com/ who deal with applications, (and to them by post with genuine documents not copies), and they forward complete papers to the Embassy to get the visa. Only the Embassy can issue a visa. and it is not a rubber stamp, it is another biometric form on an empty page in your passport. Photocopies are not acceptable or used at all at any stage. These are the fees you must pay the Government. It is straightforward so anyone can do this easily.
It's only scammers who want to make it difficult.
Email and contact's directly from a "family "that are not from an agency are fake EVEN IF THEY QUOTE AN ADVERT. It's the client who has paid and you deal with the Agency not the family /client. You will only know personal things at a later stage in official letters from the Agency. You will know enough about client to decide on taking the job but you will probably not get a home address yet. You will probably have a personal interview with the Agency who will act for the client in that matter.
IN THE UK AT LEAST, IF YOU ARE REGISTERED TO BE AVAILABLE FOR WORK AT AN AGENCY THEY WILL NOT CHARGE YOU TO REGISTER. YOU WILL PAY A SMALL PERCENTAGE OUT OF YOUR WAGE BECAUSE CLIENT PAYS YOUR MONEY TO THE AGENCY AND THEY PAY YOU.
THEY WILL NOT GIVE YOUR DETAILS TO A THIRD PARTY UNTIL THEY NEED TO KNOW THEM.

Your Flight has to be secured from here and booked from here just for some documentation reasons, so i will want you to check the air fare from your country to California USA, tell me the airline that will be suitable for you to travel with. We will do all that from here. As soon as i am done with that also you shall check online for the confirmation of your flight. You can get back to me swiftly. Though am at work and so i might not be quick to respond to your emails.

Subject: FIRST STEP TO TAKE

Hello,
I need to make you understand that I am the one in-charge
if your document, They already spoke to me about you and all they
want. With the way everything has gone so far, this is not a difficult
situation to handle and like i told Dan and Pam i will need just about
2-3 days to get everything prepared, i will make my co-workers do
extra work just to make sure that we can get the documents processes
as express and urgent ones.
After much discussion so far with Pamela, I have spoken to
some other guys in the cultural exchange department and they have all
given me suitable means to get it done as soon as the stipulated time.
Maybe you may also wish to know some few things about the
position you are about to be employed to.

An Au Pair is usually a foreign national who has entered the USA to
live with a family while improving his/her knowledge of the English
language. He/she is treated as a member of the family's household
rather than an employee and, in return for limited childcare and

which will be returned at the end of the year. If the au pair leaves
before the stipulated time, he/she has to bear the costs for the
flight back to his/her home country and will not get the deposit back.
But in your situation your host family has made it clear that you
both will shoulder the whole expenses so you are lucky to have Dan and
Pamela.

Pocket money: Not lesser than 300,75 USD per week

Duration of stay: Au pairs may come to the United States for a minimum
of 12 months. A thirteenth month is normally added to travel across
the country. Au pairs have also the possibility of a one-time
extension for an additional period of 6, 9, or 12 months.

on child safety and 24 hours of training on child development before
going to the host family. Furthermore, the au pair must take part in
further education courses and the family must pay up to $700 per year
for this purpose. Some agencies offer language courses to the au pair
which might also be obligatory.

Educational background: The au pair must have good knowledge and needs
a high school diploma or a corresponding education.
If the au pair is required to look after a child under the age of two,
the au pair has to demonstrate that she has at least 200 hours of
child care experience with infant children of that age group. If the
au pair is required to care for a child younger than 3 months, it is
obligatory that a parent or other adult is present during that time.
Insurance: The host family must pay a health insurance for the au
pair. It is advisable that the au pair effects an accident insurance
and a third party insurance for the stay.

Visa: To become a legal au pair in the USA you need to have a J1-Visa
or a Ds 2019 Formula. You can only apply for this J1-Visa if you go
through one of the 13 federally designated au pair agencies. From
these agencies you can get a DS-2019 form with which you can apply for
a visa. I have hence been linked with the DS-2019 form by some
agencies.

There are so many documents to be done to enhance a free and easy
entrance into America as an aupair or nanny or babysitter. I will
mention some documents for you here for you just to know. All the
documents would be arranged for immediately i get to the office today.

There must be a letter of invitation from the family

Au Pair Letter is suitable where a family wishes to invite someone
to join their family as an Au Pair. The working times, allowance and
other conditions meet the standards recommended by the American Au
Pair Agencies Association.

The host family should complete the letter of invitation and send it
to the Au Pair who will then be able to use the letter to support
his/her application for a visa. Even if the Au Pair does not require a
visa to enter the USA as an au pair, this letter is still useful since
it sets out the terms under which you are offering the Au Pair
position and can therefore help avoid misunderstandings.

The recommended weekly allowance for an Au pair should not be lower
than 300,75 USD (towards the top end in the USA area). Any sum
substantially lower could suggest that the Au Pair is filling the
position of a domestic slave which might not require a work permit and
may result in the host having to register as an employer and pay
National Insurance and PAYE.

This Au Pair Letter is suitable for use in USA and includes clauses covering:

accommodation
allowance
duties (including babysitting)
holidays
holiday pay
start date and duration of position
working times.
accommodation
benefits
duties
expenses
holiday entitlement
probationary period
rates of pay
sickness
statutory disciplinary and grievance procedures
termination of employment
working times

Other documents to be done are also

Codice fiscale (ID): this ID is needed to be employed as an au pair
register with the American National Health Service on a voluntary basis
open a bank account
The American Tax ID (Codice fiscale) can be obtained from the locally
competent tax authority.

The following documents have to be submitted:
a valid residence permit
a copy of an ID card/passport

Liability Insurance: This insurance is held responsible for damage
which is unintentionally caused to a third party within the context of
private and family life. This insurance is also liable for harms which
have been caused with malicious intent by an au pair girl or boy as
well as in case of an accident that happens to the au pair boy or girl
while he/she is taking care of the host family's child/children.
Administrative procedure for Non USA citizens

Work permit: Au pairs from all around the world need a work permit

Residence Card: citizens don't have to apply for a Residence Card. To
apply one must visit at the locally competent Police Headquarters and
any more. Those who wish to stay in America for 3 months or less can
declare their presence at the locally competent Police Headquarters.

I have taken my time to inform you of all these so you know the amount
of work that i need to put in place just for within three days. I owe
the family an obligation to do all this so i will put all hands on
deck to make this happen as they want you around as soon as possible.
I will prepare all of this documents from here.

You will only have to send to me scanned page of a very good passport
photograph and your bio-data details, i hope you understand what a
bio-data form is and you will also need to send a scanned page of your
international passport to include passport number and date issued and
expiration.

Thanks.
