You are correct in thinking this is a scam. The language tells me you are dealing with an African scammer.

The scammer tells us what kind of scam he is running here:

This is a typical overpayment scam. The scammer is planning to send you a fake check, or one that is written on a stolen/phished account. If it is a good fake or the account owner does not know his information was stolen, it will initially fool the bank, and they will cash it. Then he would either have you buy and send merchandise for him, or send a part of the money to someone for this supposed shopping.

Later, when the bank realizes the check was fraudulent, you would be the one who appeared to commit the fraud. The scammer, who has used all fake information, has taken the money or the merchandise, and he has disappeared. The bank would come after you for the entire cost of the check, and possibly have you charged with a crime for depositing it.
